This underground water system made the desert bloom, literally! It carried water far and wide without succumbing to the desert problem of evaporation.
It was a small museum and the tunnel was very dark and when we reached the underground Water System, to be honest, it was so small area to stand that it was packed with tourists and I was not awed by it. In my opinion, this sights can be skipped.
It was a small museum with a real karez in it. So you could understand how they could have continuous water supply. Do not forget to go down the tunnel to see the real karez.
The history of this place is fascinating. Turpan was one of our favourite places along the Silk Road - a green oasis in the desert! Thanks to the 2000 year old underground water system, there are vineyards -the grapes are dried and turn into totally delicious raisins. Our guide - Ahmat from Xinjiang Travel - gave us great insight into the history and culture of the region. Absolutely recommended!
Turpan is an interesting place. I loved it. We were there as part of a Silk Road Tour with China Focus Travel, just 8 of us.The water system is impressive and the displays are informative, but I wish we could have gone to one of the water channels further up towards the mountains and also to a real raisin drying house with raisins instead of plastic facsimiles.
We visited here as part of a Silk Road tour. The water system is impressive and this place tries to explain it and does a good job. There is the inevitable shop at the end!Wished our tour had taken us out to see the system going towards the mountains
Very intereting and revealing site with a lot of valuable explanations in English - definitely a place to when you are with family in town
Don't go there . Rather boring !Actually there is almost nothing to seeTourist trap among the grapes wines
This is an informative presentation of how the system works. It is right in town and set up like a museum although the system is working. You walk along the stream underground and at the end end up in the gift shop. Still worth seeing.
This tourist trap represents every thing that can go wrong in China with letting the local cadres run the show. This is a definite pass, have a local guide show you the real thing instead of this glorified souvenir stand.
The story of the Karez water system is very well presented and laid out. The grape vineyards all through the exhibits are a really pleasant part of this experience.
