Stumbled into this church during my early morning run. Revisited next day late morning. My advise is go early. You get better morning light and the place to yourself for better pictures.

This area of Hakodate was an absolute standout for me. There are a ton of nice churches and temples around the area (along with a nice park) and it's definitely a good break from all the hustle and bustle of the fish market and port. When we arrived, it was about 8 in the morning (I think it opens at 10 am), but if we had more time, I would have definitely loved to check it out.

I recommend spending 2 hours or so walking and roaming around this area. There are a cluster of church buildings, a few eating restaurants and shops around. Go in the day time as most are closed in the evenings.

This church is a landmark of Hakodate. Its image is used for many different things to promote tourism in Hakodate. The church has its real name "Holy Resurrection Church of Hakodate." I hope everyone learns that it is a Japanese Orthodox church, neither Russian nor Greek. It belongs to the local Japanese faithful. It's a place of worship. Of course, everyone is welcome to join the service. Saturday evening service starts at 5pm, and Sunday liturgy starts at 10am. In order to preserve and maintain the church building, visitors are expected to make some donation. It's not a fee. I hope everyone respects that it's a place where people pray quietly.

You pass this as part of your Motomachi area walkabout and you will know it by the distinctive green copper domes representative of many Russian churches. Apparently locally it is also known as the Ding Dong church because of the sound of its bell. Take you shoes off to go inside and see a really ornate alter and listen to piped choral music

Nice little church. Worth a couple of photos as you walk around the historic part of town. You can go inside as well.

A real atmospheric architectural delight one would really not expect to see in japan. Inside the icons are beautiful but there wasn't any information in English which is a shame. Nevertheless don't miss this . 200 yen to get in.

Located on the top of the hill. You walk and could enjoy the lovely view of Hagodate. The slope walk is lovely and the church itself is not big but good size. We don't like the hospitality of the two old ladies work at church that are rude compare to other places we visit.

An awesome and great one. On my way walking up to it... it started to snow, just a bit, but it feels so cool. There's also red leaves, sort of like flying around... due to the strong wind. Seems so dramatic, with the snow & red leaves.....

We didn't plan to stop by, but decided to take a walk from the rope-way station. It was very close and we visited around 9pm after enjoying the night view of Hakodate city from the mountain. The small, white church was beautifully lit up- it was a bit dessert area, and would have been a bit scary if alone, but saw a few night-time visitors there. The building was closed so we were not able to go inside though. The neighborhood was very quaint and charming - definitely nice to stop by if you go up to the mountain via Rope-way.

the church building is attractive, does not charge an admission fees but request for volunteer donations. The interior of the church showcase some nice paintings for visitors to see

Nice walk with several nice building for pictures in the Motomachi areas. It's easy to getbthere but I think the evening sceneries with the lights ar better

One proof that Hakodate is a melting pot. Classical Russian design, in an old street lined up with other churches, leading to Mt. Hakodate

alanyeo76

Classic Russian architecture in Japan. Goo to take a look and it's still functioning as a church today.
