This was the last stretch of our bike trip and it was the best! The quality of the natural environment is special and it is a lot more beautiful than all the guide books recommend. It's perfect for anyone interested in authentic unspoilt places. There are plenty of guides (unofficial) too to show you the crabs, crocodiles, birds and the caves with bats everywhere! There are bulls on the road for anyone cycling. I only realisd when I zoomed past one that did not want to move off the road.

We went on a guided bird-watching trip of a couple of hours at the end of December and it was a wonderful experience. We got a really good look at bee hummingbirds, which are truly incredible and well worth the trip just by themselves: think of the ball in the Quiddich game in Harry Potter and you get an idea. But we also saw many other birds and, as a special bonus, a boa constrictor. Our guide spoke perfect English and managed to attract several birds with his convincing imitations of their songs. He also lent us some good binoculars. Be warned, you need your own car for the trips in the park and it is no longer possible to hire cars at the Maria La Gorda hotel. The closest place to get a taxi appears to be Pinar del Rio, over 100 km away. I didn't manage to get through to the park by phone or e-mail before arriving in Cuba but you do need to reserve the trip, apparently at least one day in advance. Complicated to arrange but well worth it!

I visited the park on July 3rd, 2013, and the weather was not great for this place. Nonetheless, our guide, Abel, did everything that we could enjoy the trip. He even spotted iguanas for us (they hide at this weather), and bee colibris (again, not easy with this weather). We missed alligators, unfortunately. Also, if you go in July, and stay at Maria La Gorda, ask them about the night turtle watch. Although, I would recommend to stay at the premises, at Las Tumbes.

When visiting Cuba please do visit its non hotel based areas such as this one- you can easily book a tour from any hotel you stay at or hire transport and make your own arrangements to get to Pinar del Rio.We booked prior to flying and so glad we did. This is truly nature lover's paradise- the open fields, the plantations, the huge oxen ploughing the land, such a diversity of flora and fauna, typical scene- two cows plodding on side by side followed by a man atop his horse complete with cowboy hat -followed by his two small dogs, all so balanced and such a thing of our long ago past. It is truly tranquil and friendly and such a wonderful atmosphere. travel through and stop over at Vinjales with its lines of porches with rocking chairs, sleepy little town but still full of local life. Sample the sweetest pineapples you are ever going to taste. Everyone is so friendly and welcoming and helpful. The whole region is devoted to a simpler and slower pace of life- and boy we could all do with living like that. The mogote mountains are spectacular rising like overgrown cakes out of the lush plateaus, plenty of tobacco growing areas delicately tended by farmers, it is a unique place.great varieties of wildlife and if you ate a twitcher you'll love this place- aswell as Zapata which is another nature lover's area. The Indian caves are wonderful to visit- unlike any others we have been into, the formations are very good for your imagination- and with a sweet boat ride that ends with a creeping ivies curtain into the sunlight. The painted mountain side is rather bizzare to say the least- but nevertheless original...plenty of colourful woodpeckers in this part. The people are the friendliest you are ever likely to meet- innocent and welcoming- please don't let tourism spoil this.It is a magical area.

Gorgeous spot: a large, nearly pristine peninsula covered in extensive native forest and with an interesting karstic topography. Here you can easily spot some of the jewels of Cuba's birdlife: Cuban Amazon (forming conspicuous flocks during mating season), Bee Hummingbird, Cuban Emerald, Cuban Trogon, and plenty of others including many water birds. The nights teem with fluttering bats and the days with butterflies. Its coral reefs offer some of the best diving spots in Cuba. The southern coast is dotted with secluded sandy beaches lined with fan palms. Go for it, if you can make it that far.
