Our visit to the bird hide gave us a view of swans, swans and more swans. There were no other birds in sight on this occasion. A little disappointing.

This is an excellent birding site with a large range of waterbirds and, during our visit, the exciting find of two Red-kneed Dotterel, which are vagrant to King Island and Tasmania .

birds, birds, birds, this location gives you a wonderful overview of a lagoon filled with a variety of birds.

All of King Island is a wonderful bird watching opportunity. After having become absorbed with bird watching all over the island and having seen species that we had never seen before, we had to follow the sign from the main road to the Shag Lagoon Bird Hide.Bird watching can be very easy here. The lagoon is beside the road and so is the hide! Suitable for the disabled, you simply step from the car into the hide. There are posters of local birds on the walls so identification could not be made easier. Well actually it could as in a box in the hide there was a pair of binoculars! This is a great place to engage kids in bird watching too. There are lists for visitors to fill in with the numbers of each species that they can see at that date and time. Counting the birds can be fun for kids and give them a sense of contributing to the knowledge of birds on the island.King Island is a differnet holiday experience; the land and sea are beautiful, the community is very friendly and there is a very real sense of isolation. And all only a one hour flight away from Melbourne. Everything you need to know to arrange a trip there can be found on the website www.kingisland.org.au
