Great day out. A bit of a walk up but views are great. Just take a seat on the rocks at the top and have a picnic

A family favourite of ours - we go most years. A good climb to the top - well made paths - but very steep. So wheelchair could get most the way up - but you would need to be exceptionally fit to push it up there... Amazing views though from the mid level back across to Mt Macedon/Camels Hump, and the surrounds. And then from the top vistas in every direction. Cafe is nice..though on staff member was quite rude when THEY mucked up the order...Scones were yummy though.

Well worth a visit for international guests. Lots of beautiful walks and the view is breathtaking. Picnic areas, bbqs are clean and well looked after.

We carried on our journey to here after visiting Mt Macedon and the lovely lunch at the macedon Hotel. My first disappointment was the entry fee but we decided to go in as we were there. There was a school activity on the green, we tried to drive further in but the road was closed. We sat and had a cuppa on a very dilapidated table overlooking the green. Large concerts are held there. The day was quite hot and the cafe was closed. We did walk up to the hanging rock via the steps though there is a walkway also, quite a climb not for the unfit. Overall disappointing, there is an info centre not air conditioned or staffed, I would not go if you are unable to do the walk

I've been here many a time. I use it as a training base prior to my treks in Nepal. Due to the steep gradient of the path and the rainforest setting. It also can have a touch of raw heat at the summit and "The Saddle".Take the "Hanging Rock" path for some great photo opportunities. Or the seperate trail direct to the Summit. Be sure not to get too adventurous as there are loose rock formations and trails that lead to sheer drops. Stick to the tracks. The rock here is unique to only a few parts of the world. Pop into the Visitor Centre and you'll find all the information you need. Upon reaching the summit be sure to remember your path upward as you will need to follow it down unless you're feeling a tad curious. You can get lost. Don't panic. Have a rest and get your breath and bearings back. It can be rather tiring. There is a cafe/bar on location,a dam stocked with trout for the kids (check for the status of this first),a racecourse,cricket/football oval, toilet facilities and so on.Entry is $10 per car and the prices rise with the size of the vehicle. It may seem excessive but remember the park has to be maintained. And is done so with great care. Here you can also get up close and personal with wildlife too. Some kangaroos will quietly go about feeding as you take photos or pet them. But be mindful they can be aggressive if provoked or just plain not in the mood for people. The animal's body language will tell all.Hope you enjoy your visit and give a small donation to help the koalas out too!

We visited on a very hot day so the walk to the top of the rock was beautiful but hard work. Usually the walk would be fine as it is not steep and you have the choice of a bitumen track or steps. One at the top you need to walk on rocks but it is fine. The views are lovely all the way up. It costs $10 per car to visit so would be worth spending more time there and having a picnic. We did not have the time for this but will next time. They seem to have a lot of events there like concerts, craft markets and the Hanging Rock horse racing so worth keep an eye on what is happening there.

Situated approx 75 kilometres north west of Melbourne, the Hanging Rock reserve provides fantastic Australian bushland. It also has an operational bush horse racetrack, with some beautiful rock outcrops ( hence the name ) which you can climb for great views of the surrounds. There is an abundance of wildlife ( mainly wild kangaroos) that roam freely in the surrounds. Cafe and BBQ facilities, from time to time there are major events such as Open air concerts and the annual car show held every February. Always check the website WWW.visitmacedonranges.com as you could get mixed up with a major event.

I loved the aura of this beautiful area. The walk to the summit was impressive, nature at its best. The little walk through centre explaining the history of the Rock was very interesting. Bbq's, picnic areas, toilets and well kept grounds make for a lovely time. I was only disappointed with the lack of choice in the souvenir shop.Well worth the $10 exit fee.

We went to Hanging rock just recently on a trip over the Xmas holidays. I had seen the movie 'Picnic at Hanging Rock' and just loved it. My fascination and familiarity with this attraction was born from this movie :) As we were going to be staying in Daylesford for a few days I just could not say no to going to the Hanging Rock Reserve and doing up walk up the tracks to see all the rocks and views. We were most certainly not disappointed!! I am not fit at all and handled the tracks well. There were a couple of steep parts however nothing that I could not handle, I have also had extensive surgery to my knee and the walk did not strain that! Our daughter of whom is 11 loved the walk to and this was in January! We wore light clothing, good shoes and took heaps of water. All up we were walking for say around 1 hour. It could have been shorter however we did pretty much all the little tracks so was longer for us, and we took our time. The rocks are just amazing !!!!!! We took our token photo under The Hanging Rock :) The views are also amazing!!!! I would most certainly recommend a visit - the rocks and views are most certainly worth it !!!!! :) P.S. Oh yes and to get into the reserve is a $10 car charge which you pay upon arrival at a boom gate - so you just have to make sure that you have the cash on you! There is also a cafe there but was not open whilst we were there. I think its called Hanging Rock Cafe.

Woodend is a lovely country town and a visit to Hanging Rock is a necessary stop if you are heading to the Macedon Ranges area. It is currently AUD$10 to bring your car into the reserve. Bring your walking shoes and a water bottle for the hike to the Hanging Rock peak. You will be rewarded with a lovely view. For those not to keen on an uphill walk, I can recommend the base walk which takes around 30 minutes at a leisurely pace (not flat terrain for a wheel chair). I was lucky enough to see rosellas, an echidna, koala and several kangaroos. There is an interesting visitor centre with displays about the history of the area. Family friendly and with a cafe and oval, Hanging Rock is a nice place to stop off at.

I hadn't been to Hanging Rock for 30+ years, so my recent visit was a real surprise. We went with the aim of exploring the various walking tracks. We walked the base walk around the rocks which was quite and secluded amongst the ferns and gum trees. There was nobody else on the track as most everybody heads straight for the summit walk. A quiet and easy walk around the base takes about 30 minutes. After a picnic lunch sitting in a shady grassed area, we embarked on the summit. A hundred metres up the track you have 2 choices for ascending to the summit area. I'd advise taking the steps. The ramp is a steady and steep incline that will really test the lungs. The views from the top are stunning and well worth it on a clear day. On the day we went it wasn't to crowded so we were able to explore and pick viewing spots without other around. If you combine this trip with a visit to one of the local wineries it's a great day.

Well worth the walk up to the top of the rock. It's got a couple of steep bits but the path is good and the views from the top are spectacular. The rock formations on the way up really are impressive to look at and give it a sense of atmosphere and mystery. The interpretive centre is worth a 10 minute look though the café isn't much to write home about. For smaller kids the walk to the top is a bit much but there is a play area and some interactive exhibits in the discovery centre. A really good family outing.

Hanging rock reserve is a lovely place to visit especially if the weather is nice and sunny for a picnic or bbq. To see the actual hanging rock itself you need to walk up the walking track surrounding the rocks and about a third way up you need to climb up the actual rocks themselves but it is achievable if you are of reasonable fitness. There is a guide map at the information centre but we were there really early and it hadnt opened as yet so that was a bit disappointing because there is about 20 places of interest on the rock itself which would have been great to follow. I saw a Kangaroo and an Echidna along the way . There is lots of nooks and crannies. It cost $10 for one vehicle and well worth it. Great day out if you have kids. A little cafe and gift shop but not a great deal of merchandise. If you love nature this is for you.

I finally by chance got to go to the iconic location which appeared in Picnic in Hanging Rock. My nephew and I took the stairs up and the path down. It was beautiful scenery and can understand how the movie was able to portray, someone turning a corner and disappearing. It was wonderful, and steep but so well worth it. I am not as fit as I would like to be and so I found it a little harder than my fit nephew. Who loved it and went at my pace, Thankyou to him for that. Go see this location and enjoy the place. we went on the 24th of December 2014 and luckily for us the $10 car parking fee was waved on this day and we got in for free. Locals told us to go on this day as it gets really busy on 25,26 of December. Would go again. There are picnic area's and a run up the rock event in early 2015.
