The blue onion-domed and red Church of Prince Dmitry the Martyr was built in the 1690s and while not overly impressive from the construction standpoint, it does have a significant place in the history books. While cruising into Uglich from St Pete, this is essentially the first landmark that you will see. The town appears to be quite quaint and representative of "real" Russia today, being so close to Moscow, but so far away. There is clearly a tourist sentiment here as there are double rows of vendor shops lining the walkway from the docks to the church and town. Most of this "stuff" is pre-manufactured wares, but if you are careful, you can find some artisan goods that are clearly different from the rest. Please be careful with this as a highly qualified travel agent traveling with us went INTO the bank, to exchange U.S. dollars for Rubles and was handed two COUNTERFEIT 1000 Ruble bills........Really, IN a bank? What you need to know is that the counterfeit bills lack the reflective foil and instead, that area of the bill is essentially dark/black. An unsuspecting tourist would not know the difference and she did not find out until she attempted to spend one.

This church was ordered built by Peter the Great 100 years after the 1591 death of Tsarevitch Dmitri, youngest son of Ivan the Terrible. He and his mother were exiled to the Uglich kremlin and kept in captivity in the only surviving original kremlin building (Prince's Palace). It is believed the young Dmitri was murdered on Boris Godunov's orders. An investigation ruled that Dmitri had an epileptic seizure and "fell" on a knife, which slit his throat. Uglich become a pilgrimage site, and Dmitry was made a saint. This church is right next to the Volga River in the town of Uglich and is now a museum. It is painted red to remind people of the blood spilled here. The church is topped with distinctive blue onion domes studded with gold stars and topped with gold crosses.

Visiting Uglich with Viking cruises was a great experience. Here We saw the Church of Prince Demitry The Martyr, built in 1690s where the body of Tsarevitch Dmirty was found. Also visited a Russian Family home. The city was founded in 1148, and has many parks, onion domed churches. You can also buy matroyshka dolls and lacquered boxes while touring the city. It was a great place to visit.

If you're interested in Russian history, especially the earlier history before Romanoffs, I highly recommend making a visit here. This is the place where the young tsarevich Dmitry, son of Ivan the Terrible, was murdered. Boris Godunov might have issued the order to kill him, even though the investigation brought a result that he stabbed himself while having an epileptic seizure. Also, it is unclear what his title to the throne was as the rules of succession only recognized Ivan's sons from his first three wives and Dmitry was son of Ivan's seventh wife. Anyway it's one of the three Russian churches of spilled blood and thus a very important historic site. The entrance fee is not much for the amazing look into Russian history. Also, the inside of the church feature rather bloody and gruesome frescoes.

It is said that in 1591, the 10-year-old son of Ivan the Terrible, Dmitry, was murdered on this spot (supposedly by the Tsar's chief advisor, Boris Godunov). As Dmitry was the last scion of the ancient Rurik dynasty, his death precipitated the dynastic and political crisis known as the Time of Troubles. To honor the boy, the Romanov tsars build this church in 1690 and turned the town of Uglich into a place of pilgrimage. Uglich has the best souvenir shopping of all the towns we stopped at along the Volga River, and I wish I had bought more there than waiting until we got to Moscow. Prices were excellent.

This church and the surrounding ones and related buildings are a very interesting collection and well worth the visit if you have the opportunity.

This is a gorgeous small church with outstanding acoustics. Several times a day a men's quartet or quintet sings a capella. Absolutely free --do not miss it. The outside of the church is a beautiful backdrop for pictures

What a history this country has, Although the church is not the only one within the Kremlin, its story about Demitry revives the story of his demise and the end of his dynasty. aAll the bad names are involved, Ivan the Terrible, Boris Gudunov, etc., making this, the spot where it unraveled, all the more important. The churches are all beautiful with their numerous onion spires bearing Blue with gold stars, green, etc

The storey of how Prince Demitry died is very interesting and points to a period in Russian history where power was the norm. The Church in his commemoration has been upgraded and reprinted bright red.The frescos inside are interesting.
