There is nothing like seeing this up close and personal. But even better was that I could see it from my hotel room and it looks great all lit up at night. Quite impressive.
Parthenon: I stayed in the hotel directly across the street from it with a balcony view. There is a lot to see and do here. Prepare to walk and climb a bit it is rugged. This ancient place is interesting when you look down into the arena area and imagine all the wrestling, speeches, and display of music and the arts that went on. The view of the city of Athens is great but the pollution tends to dull it out in the distance. Mind your p's and q's here because there are armed guards hiding in small rocky bunkers with machine guns. They really mean don't touch or take anything on this site. If you behave you will not see them. If you don't they pop out instantly to remind you. Definitely worth the ticket compared to other ruins. Visit the Plaka (plaza) nearby while your there. Many, Many restaurants and outdoor dealers from around the world in the streets.
Stunning view over the city of Athens. The site is beautiful, and very well maintained. The site is under renovation, and will be for quite a long time. However, I found it very interesting because you get to see the different parts of renovations, and how they are putting the pieces back together.
Prior to my trip I was told that the Parthenon will probably be covered in so much scaffolding that there is little to see or to be impressed by. Well, yes there is ongoing restoration work and I originally attempted to avoid the cranes and scaffolding in my photos and observations. As a family with multiple cameras and devices, we have many pictures of the Parthenon and ultimately, one of my favourite photos taken by a family member is from straight on with full visibility of the cranes and workmen. I am not certain why but I think it touches something in me that believes in the love and dedication the modern world has to preserve the wonderful creations of the past. It really was marvelous to just wander around atop the Acropolis and enjoy the view and the moment.
