Last June I was in the Dala-Jarna area of Sweden when I decided to go on a copper mine tour. It was an exceedingly interesting tour. Our male guide was very knowledgeable about its history and he answered every one of our esoteric questions. My husband's a geologist and I hope to return to this copper mine in 2015.

Me and my wife visited the city of Falun, regional capital city of the county of Dalarna in mid Sweden. Bang in the middle of the city there's a great attraction, an old copper mine, a world heritage site which is worth a visit.

Its a must, its a worls class experience, its an experience you rember the rest of your life, and it culturalmas its tells you a lot about Sweden and Falun which once was second largest in the world. You get to listen to nice stories also.

As a retired UK citizen now living in Falun I must have taken fifty odd guests on trips to the mine.It is a World Heritage site and rightly so. The history of mining here goes back a long way and the tour is usually very informative. I have personally taken the tour maybe six times over the past twenty years. It is worth checking by phone before traveling to find the time of a tour in your language. Don't worry about speaking Swedish as most of the staff can speak good English. If you come across one who can't I'd be surprised. The trip down the mine is a walking tour but not too strenuous. It is suitable for children but I would say they probably need to be over six or seven years old or you may struggle to keep them entertained. You cannot take strollers or buggies down there so the kids must be capable of walking unaided. That said, my daughter first did the trip when she was about six or seven and quite enjoyed it, even if she didn't really understand all of the information. It is quite well lit so no dramas there. The mine museum is as interesting as any other museum. It is worth a visit but probably only for an hour or so.I thought ticket prices were reasonable compared to other similar attractions and the car park is free if you are coming by road. The car park is also only a very short walk away from the mine entrance.Don't wear expensive shoes or clothing and remember it is usually a little cold down there. Hard hats and a cape are provided free. It is a must-see if you are going to be in town.

Most interesting, and I'm not even interested in mining! Apart from the open-cut mine itself (and the fascinating tour underground) there is a museum, a fantastic gift-shop, cafes, restaurants, and second-hand/antique shops to rummage around in. Found a lovely traditional copper kettle for a fourth of the price that I saw in Stockholm. Faluners are friendly. Some bird-watchers helped us look at rare owls nesting in the open-cut mine (they had powerful telescopes). A must-visit.

It's like taking a step back in time to go down in the mines. Quite impressive and slightly scary but well worth a visit.

The history of this mine goes back 1300 + years, and is very interesting. It really helped us understand the underground mine tour that we had looked around the museum before, not least as we were perhaps unlucky with our guide, who was a little uncertain and had a limited vocabulary and a too quiet voice. It would have been helpful - and safer - to have had more lighting in some places, such as the steps and some tunnels. The publicity explains that there are many steps and also that the temperature is only +5 C. ( you do go back up to ground level by elevator.) However, it also says that the tour is suitable for anyone over 3 years old, but we felt that it would not as the surface is very uneven, wet, slippery, and often rather dark, so they might well need carrying at a difficult and dangerous angle. It could also be a frightening experience, given all of the above. The site is big and includes various other buildings and exhibits, including an interesting "village", explaining about the many minerals and their uses that link to the mine. There is also a shop and cafe.

Very nice minewalk 1.5 km walk around "Stora Stöten". The walk had very good information signs. We did not try the cafe or restaurant in the area. Nice view and many places to look for birds.

LindaT649

The mine was intereting and the man leading the tour was really good. However, the tour was only about 1 hour long, and one didn't get to see that much of the mine, and very little of the outside areas were explained, There were many many passages that were not on the tour. For double the price of a movie, it should be a longer tour.

The visit to the coppermine was very interested. We had an experienced guide with our group who could tell nice stories. You can borrow raincoats, helmets, rubber boots.
