After spending a bit of time in England and seeing several impressive priories, cathedrals, and even parish churches, this one took the cake. Carlisle Cathedral is absolutely stunning. Fine detail everywhere you look. While the ceiling is the show-stopper, the misericords are the most amusing (check the gift shop, you can purchase reproductions of some of them, so cute!!). I found the St. Augustine panels were poorly preserved, but it's no wonder given their placement in the cathedral, just ask a docent if you can pull back the curtains to see them and don't miss the ones on the other side either (the apostles). There was a helpful illustration to give you an idea of how they would have looked in their day. Lastly, don't miss the Norse rune inscription near the entrance, the translation is essentially "Tolfink was here." All in all, the cathedral is beautiful and contains history spanning every age.

Lovely cathedral that seems bigger on the inside and has plenty to see. Easy to find from the centre of Carlisle.

Very easy access as this is right in the middle of the shopping centre, inside is beautiful and has lots to see, the crypt is worth a visit to see the treasures it holds even with the additional cost.

the area around is very historic and attractive particularly when the sun is shining and the leaves are on the floor . inside the cathedral is much the same as many but this is to be expected

Centrally located the Cathedral set in pleasant gardens and is well worth a visit. The guides are very knowledgeable and will help you make the most of your visit. The tea rooms offer snacks and meals at reasonable prices. There is no admission fee but donations are welcome.

Carlisle Cathedral is the second smallest in the country but a big, solid construction from the early 1100s, in lovely red sandstone. It is set in a "close", part-walled, with part of the cloisters and fratery (a cafe) intact. A later addition is a pele tower from Border Reiver times. The nave ceiling is beautiful. In the treasury is the oldest item in the building, a first century Roman funerary urn. There are several old treasures eg the Brougham Tryptych. The Border Regiment chapel and the choir are impressive. There is a gift shop on site. Visitors will see a welcomer and guide and often a prayer chaplain on duty to address spiritual issues.

Carlisle is a wonderful city to visit, plenty of good budget hotels and eaterys. It is a great base for visiting Hadrians wall and has good transport services to the lake district and is only 10 miles from Scotland. The City itself has a beautiful cathedral, castle and a great museum. It is steeped in history from early Roman times. In my view it is definitely worth a nvisit

I think there must be some confusion here! The Cathedral does not, and has never charged an entry fee.We are very appreciative of any donations made, as they are vital to the upkeep of this building, but the Dean and Chapter are very keen to make the Cathedral available for everyone.

Do not fail to visit this cathedral when you come to Carlisle. It is located within the city's pedestrianised area
