The trip to John Lennons childhood home was fab! The national trust guide was great and provided good information which gave visitors a good insight in Johns childhood. To see his school reports and childhood drawings was amazing. When travelling to the house on national trust bus the driver pointed out childhood play areas of John.

The Mendips home ( owned by the national trust and now supported and commandeered by Yoko, of course) is quite beautiful, with floral stained glass windows and a lovely cream colored paint overall. A nice setting on a pretty street, as well. You must book a visit through the trust, however, so only the facade can be viewed on the various tours. But I was surprised how close John and Paul's homes were - just across an expanse of golf course. And how much the middle class/working class divide still mattered 55 years ago. We saw where John's mother Julie was struck by the car, nearly right in front of the house.

I'm lucky enough to be an American-born Beatles fan who now lives in the Merseyside area, so I've done this tour a number of times. I highly recommend this tour for Beatles and John Lennon fans. The custodian is a Beatles fan and is enthusiastic and informative. The home has been restored to how the home would have been when John lived there with his Aunt Mimi. If you a are a Beatles fan, I would highly recommend taking the tour of John Lennon's former home Mendips and Paul McCartney's former home on 20 Forthlin Road. Both residences are now owned and maintained by the National Trust. You'll hear plenty of Beatles anecdotes as well as anecdotes about John and his Aunt Mimi. If you're a Beatles fan in Liverpool and only here for a short time, I highly recommend you include the National Trust tour of these two Beatles' homes in your sightseeing.

The house was on my bucket list for a long time and did not disappoint with evoking a poignant and slightly emotional experience. I was alone in Lennon's bedroom for a couple of minutes and it felt surreal to imagine (sorry for pun) what had happened or been dreamt up in it. Colin, the guide, was full of anecdotes and a friendly fellow who is obviously passionate about the Beatles. Combined with McCartney's Forthlin Road house it was an experience that will stay with me for a long time. Everyone was delighted.

great to see where it all started and where his auntie mimi lived, and of course where his mother was killed very sad.

The custodian brought the tour alive. He was a mine of interesting information. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Make sure you book through the National Trust prior to the visit as that is the only way you will get in.

profecto

I agree with all of the other reviews which praise this National Trust tour. It is quite an experience to be in the houses where John and Paul spent much of their early life. There was one aspect which I found off-putting - at each house all handbags and cameras are confiscated at the door and not returned until the end of the visit - no explanation given. I'm accustomed to 'no photos' rules (which seem mean unless they are for conservation reasons) but in the hundreds of museums and houses and galleries and palaces we have visited all over Europe and beyond, we have never had our handbags taken away. I read all the other reviews here to see whether anyone else had mentioned this odd requirement and nobody else has raised the matter, let alone objected. So I stand alone in finding it offensive.

My parents and I are huge Beatles fans. The only way to get inside John Lennon and Paul McCartney's childhood homes are with the National Trust and this is made abundantly clear, so I don't understand people complaining about it not being good/a day out etc. - if you want to get inside then book on the NT tour.We were picked up from outside the Jury's Inn by the Albert Dock, had a brief brief from the minibus driver about what to expect, a bit of Beatles history, especially for John and Paul then off we went with Beatles music playing. We got to Mendips where we were talked to about John's childhood, what Mimi was like and her attitude and what the National Trust had done (e.g. made it as much like it was when John was growing up as they could). They explained that you can only take pictures outside and that other tours stop off outside so there could be extra noise. The tour guides at both places were very knowledgeable, full of stories of John and Paul's childhoods. Personally, I would have liked more time at John's house as he was my favourite Beatle, but I appreciate that they have lots of tours throughout the day so people can all access it.Highly recommend for any Beatles fan (and indeed want to go back myself), but from pick up to drop of at Jury's Inn it's about an hour and a half, so plan accordingly.

Did not dislike anything Everthing was fine from pick up point to the end of tour Probably not so good if you have a bad back or leg problems as you get out the cab stops a lot but thats the best bits of it.
