Had a great day. My son enjoyed Eagle Scout day. I'm glad that I had the opportunity to see the Vermont State Capitol. The building is beautiful and is filled with Vermont history . My wife and I are glad that we took a day off to drive to Montpelier.

Our beautiful State House is the oldest capitol building in the nation that is, A. In near-original condition, and B. Still used for it's original purpose. Set against a wooded hillside, it is a golden-domed gem. We offer guided and self-guided tours. The building is among the most accessible of any of the 50 states. If you visit Montpelier, the smallest Capitol City in the USA (only 8,000 residents), you simply must stop in and say "Hello" to us!I love it, of course, because I am a State Representative who lives here in the City.

What is there to say? Montpelier is a lovely and quintessentially Vermont town, small and utterly charming but NOT, I'm glad to say, "hipster" or "cute". It's REAL. Nothing too "precious", no Laura Ashley, just fresh air and solid buildings and no-nonsense Yankees. This is all reflected in the State Capitol Building. Naturally it's made out of local granite, meant to endure forever. Understated and yet powerful, I love it and the whole town for that matter.

We stopped and walked thru the state capital. We viewed a bit of history, saw paintings of presidents, a statue of Ethan Allen, and ate lunch in their café.

Worth walking by. The building is a typical New England State House, it is lovely to walk by, especially in the Fall. Much different experience than Boston...

We visited the capitol and joined a tour given by one of the volunteer guides. The building has been restored to its appearance in the 1870s and 1880s and is quite striking. The desks, woodwork, and carpeting are beautiful. Our tour included the senate and house of representatives. By chance we met two state representatives who were very friendly and told us about the workings of the state and the legislature.Admiral George Dewey was from Montpelier. The capitol lobby has an original oil painting of him at the Battle of Manila Bay in 1898 that appears in many history books. The second floor room with two Civil War battle scenes and several generals is very dramatic.There is no admission charge. The capitol is a great visit.

So you might not think visiting the smallest State Capitol is worth it, but it definitely is. The town is simply adorable. And the Capitol building is quite lovely. The leaves on the grounds were turning and created a stunning backdrop against the white and gray marble of the government buildings. I was lucky the Capitol was open so I was able to take a self-guided tour at no charge. There was a docent on hand leading tours, but it was easy enough to tour on my own. Be sure to go upstairs. There's some beautiful paintings and a spectacular view out the front window.

Historic building made most interesting by an excellent and well informed docent. She had many stories to tell and there were no questions asked that Marilyn didn't answer. The building is interesting for its slow yielding to technology and modernity.

The leaves were just turning when we arrived at the capitol to take a group picture. There were 50 of us seniors traveling the New England States. What a beautiful picture we got. The setting was awesome with the beautifully manicured lawn and flowers. A don't miss opportunity!

We had a brief stop on our way to Ben and Jerry's and unfortunately, did not have time for a tour of the State Capitol. However, I enjoyed the fall foliage that surrounded this smallest of U.S. capitals. It was definitely a worthwhile stop. Thanks to the wonderful folks at the nearby Visitors Center who gave us a brief overview of the surrounding area.

This is a striking place for a photo op. Take time to tour the grounds and walk around. The fall colors give a superb backdrop to the gold dome of the capitol building

Beautiful, yet small State Capitol Building right in the center of downtown Montpelier. For a very small city and state in general, there is a lot of unique history with Vermont and the State House itself. Very beautiful building, and the inside is even more incredible. Definitely worth the trip. Make sure to take pictures while you're here!

This is a beautiful building in a nice setting. Inside is even prettier. Although small, this capitols a real pleasure to visit since you don't have to go through security to get in and you can visit on your own or you can join the free tours offered by volunteers. Our guide was very nice and knew a lot about the history of Vermont. He answered many questions and was most welcoming.I loved the ceilings with their elaborate carved features. The chandeliers are also very nice. Overall a very nice experience which I would recommend to any visitor.Parking is free on weekends. The history museum is practically next door so you visit both places without moving your car.

even though it is the smallest city in the country to be a state Capitol, it is one of the most beautiful. Clean and well manicured grounds......very impressive!
