As novice birders, our visit to the Black Swamp Obersvatory facility was the perfect way to start our exploration of the Western Lake Erie Shore. And the exploration started before we arrived -- BSBO has one of the best websites ever! On their site, I found a place to stay, places to eat, wildlife refuges and parks to visit, even local hospitals should we need one. And oh yes, some extraordinary information about birding opportunities in the area. We plan to return, and when we do, I'll use the BSBO website to plan the trip.

The Black Swamp Bird Observatory Office and Gift Shop is located at the entrance of the Magee Marsh Wildlife Area. I parked in the parking lot and walked about taking in all the sights and sounds. This is a great spot to get close to the many birds that frequent the area. The Gift Shop was loaded with new and different gift items that are sure to please any nature lover. I found a few perfect gifts for myself too. The staff was very knowledgeable and helpful. I made a special effort to visit here and my way west and I am so glad I did. Next time through I will plan more time to enjoy the nature all around this spot.

Bring you binoculars and cameras. We were able to see many varieties of birds, some of which we have not seen elsewhere.
