Having heard about the metal sculptures in and around Borrego Springs, CA, we made our way to the desert for an adventure. We found the 50+ full size and larger than life sculptures were highlighted in a "Borrego Springs Village Guide we got at the Anza-Borrego State Park Visitor Center and also available at many locations around town. For a preview go to www.galletameadows.com. A map in the guide shows you the location and description of all of the sculptures. Then it becomes like a scavenger hunt and we were determined to photograph every one of the pieces. And we did! You can drive off the road to get up close to the sculptures. Or you can walk to them, most within a hundred yards or less. We were able to park our car between two gigantic Tyrannosaurus Rex that appear to be attacking us.The best of the "dinosaurs" are a little further off the paved road and probably accessible with a regular car, but I would be more comfortable with a high clearance car like our SUV.If you are taking photos, lighting can be tricky as the best shots don't always have the best lighting. Some better with morning light some afternoon.If you want to see more of the sculptures you can visit the artist Ricardo Brecedaat his studio near Temcula about an hour away.

Land bought to stop it being developed all over the valley floor. Art work of thing s that did or Ming that've lived here long, long ago. No admission. You might get map of ocarina from visitors center. Kids will like it and adults too.

Driving along in Borrego Springs and looking for the metal statues of prehistoric animals, giraffes, camels, serpents, dinosaurs, horses, rams, was fun and entertaining. I hope they continue to add more statue featured and maybe a walking trail. These were really awesome creations.

What a fantastic treasure in the desert. Ricardo's work is amazing. Make sure you get a map to see all of the hundred plus sculptures. Love the Jeep.

The sculptures are phenomenal. The C of C booklet has a map showing the various locations. Our favorite by far was the serpent.... The eagle is excellent as well. Kids will love the T-Rex....

The detail that went into making these realistic, rusty looking statues is phenomenal. Thanks to deceased benefactor, Dennis Avery, we can see replicas of both historic and prehistoric creatures up close. Artist Ricardo Breceda put AMAZING detail into the sculptures. One has to see them to believe it. Plan for most of a day, driving down easy dirt roadways to get close and take photos. This is unique and will amaze those to whom you send pictures.

Last year we found a few of these great sculptures. This year we found a lot more. I've seen several, but not all of the sculptures around Borrego Springs. Each trip I look for a couple more (without the map to locate them). Exploring for them and then enjoying them is part of the fun of a visit to the area.

We loved driving around and taking pictures of the amazing sculptures of artist Ricardo Breceda in Borrego Springs. You can pick up a map in Borrego Springs and drive around to the sculptures. You can actually drive right up to the sculptures and pose and touch them it is truly art for the people, such a gorgeous, fun, gift to a traveler. The sculptures are spread out, we drove to each sculpture and found them intriguing. They had a lot of detail and many are animals or items you would expect to find in the desert. The animals are life like and captured in motion. The dinosaurs are large and look like would have been roaming the area during the dinosaur age. My favorite dinosaur appeared to travel under the road and come up on the other side! It's a great place for some photo ops and a way to explore the desert.

A good flat bike ride from the town on quiet roads brings you to an area dotted with sculptures. Most unusual.

The sculptures are amazing and it is fun to spot them as you drive around the desert. Standing in front of the mouth of a dragon and other creatures is a great photo op. Being able to walk around them and view from all angles is a great experience.

I wouldn't drive a long distance out of the way to see these, but since we were in the area to visit Anzo-Borrego Desert State Park, we put these our itinerary. Most of the sculptures are just sitting out in the desert in a remote area outside Borrego Springs. Many are very large and easy to spot. Our favorite was the giant dragon/serpent that crosses under the road. This would be a good activity if it's very hot or someone in your group has mobility issues, because you can drive right up to a lot of them in your air-conditioned vehicle. If you're in Anza Borrego park, male sure you see at lest one of these sculptures. They are truly amazing works of art out in the middle if pretty much nowhere. Most of them are off the road a bit, but no problem getting there, don't need a 4x4. Even if it's a quick stop, do it!

The Breceda Sculptures in Galleta Meadows is definitely an attraction that you'll want to see whether staying in, or passing through, Borrega Springs. There are approximately 140 metal sculptures scattered in the desert, mostly along Borrego Springs Road, both above and below Palm Canyon Drive. If you go to the Galleta Meadows website, and click on Maps, there's a map that shows you where many of the sculptures can be found. From horses, to elephants, to sea serpents, to prehistoric beasts, they're all there. Definitely worth a visit.
