It is most sad that we did not manage to tour the Anne Spencer House. However, we did managed to visit the garden behind the house. The garden was simply vibrant with many variants of colorful blooming flowers during our visit. There is a small round pond and it would have been so nice to sit there to read a book. I would love to go back and made a tour of the house. There is a fee for the house tour of US$15/- per adult, US$10/- senior, US$3/- for children under 12 years and US$5/- for college students with ID tag. There is also a different rate for groups of 10 and above. There is no fee for visiting the garden.Guided tour of the house has to be arranged in advance.CONTACT: Call: 434 845-1313email : 1313piercest@annespencermuseum.com

I viewed this home on TripAdvisor of things to do in Lynchburg. Not really knowing what to expect, I sent an email to arrange a tour. (All tours are arranged in advance; they do not have regularly scheduled tours.). Shaun got back to me immediately and we scheduled a tour time. That morning we discovered that Shaun was Anne Spencer’s granddaughter. I had not made the connection from the website. She met us at the home and gave us a personal tour and history lesson about Anne Spencer and her husband and family that lasted 1-1/2 hours. It was one of the most enjoyable home tours we have ever done. The home Chauncey built for Anne is comfortable and felt like a warm hug from Anne herself. We might not have visited given that there is a lot to do in the Lynchburg area and a limited amount of time, but I am glad we did not miss learning about this fascinating woman.

It was a joy to go back in time with the granddaughter of Anne Spencer. She guided us through the house and gardens and gave us so many wonderful facts about Anne Spencer and her husband. I felt as if I was visiting a grandmother and she was going to walk through the door at any moment. Depending on your age the home will take you back in time with all the original funishings. The back of the house overlooks the beautiful gardens that any gardener would love to own. This house museum is a must for anyone visiting the Lynchburg,VA area. It's a reminder that wonderful treasures come in small packages.

When you see this house you see nothing but love. I am happy to have known Anne's son Chauncy, but my love of nature and the poem makes me wish that I'd have had the opportunity to know her. This home shows how people can accomplish a great deal with very little.

The home of Anne Spencer, an eccentric and successful Harlem Renaissance poet, is wonderfully preserved and managed as a quaint house museum by Anne's granddaughter near downtown Lynchburg. The home is in the beautiful Queen Anne style and is filled with unique art and furnishings, each with their own story. The house was visited by many other artists of the Harlem Renaissance period and reflects not only the work of Anne but of her talented and well-known friends of the time, such as Langston Hughes. Anne was also an avid gardener and her gorgeous backyard garden is open to the public (and free) from sunrise to sunset. This little house museum is a gem and anyone would enjoy visiting. Her granddaughter's dedication to preserving her home and legacy is inspiring and this is why it is important to visit the Anne Spencer house and support small historic house museums. :)
