burlington county prison museum

It is an interesting place. There are a lot of reasons to visit this old jail, but that fact that the most recent use of it was sometime around the late 60s is the main reason. One of the caretakers is a personal friend of mine. I might be a little biased about this attraction as it is located the town where I went to high school.

Kind of spooky, but it give a good feel for prison life from the 1800s until mid 1960s. Be sure to check out the warden's house and it's interesting paintings. Admission is reasonable, also.

Wow - this is one of the first prisons in the US that is now a museum. You can tour the entire facility. The warden's apartment is part of the tour as well as the gallows in the rear yard. Hard to believe this place was in use from 1819 to November 1965!!

Did not know that Burlington County had an actual prison until we went. You can feel the old history there. AND I am sure that there are a ghost or two to say "hi" to us as we walked. It is not big but it is filled with history.

I have been on the tour several times. I'll go AGAIN . Maybe I'll experience the ghosts living within those walls .....oooooo!

If you like history it's a nice place to visit. Just looking at the place and walking around on the inside hard to believe it was active as long as it was.

Self styled tour. Very reasonable (I think under $10 each). Walk through history at an old style county jail with cells and work areas.

Nice and quick with kids and can start a great conversation. Gotta check out some of the drawings and writing done by the prisoners, about an hour. Perfect with small to young kids. Gonna check it out around Halloween.

Ive never toured this landmark during the day but at night during halloween they put on a great scare. Not recomened for small children but deffinatly for the thrill seekers

This building was designed c. 1802 by John Mills, noted architect of the Washington Monument in DC. Scary as it looks from the outside, it was originally designed to be a "humane penitentiary" i.e., a place where people could become sorry for their crimes. It contained an ingenious form of directed heating from a central furnace and included a basement workshop where debtors could earn money toward their release. Amazingly it was in use until the early 1960's, horrendously overcrowded, and far from the ideal Mills had in mind. There are many stairs and this is not an accessible site, but enjoyable for the able bodied.The current photo above is not of the prison, but of the Federal Courthouse to it's left. It's well worth pausing to look at the two buildings side by side, and ponder the contrasting messages they convey.

Saturday afternoon .. we are looking for something to do and wind up at Burlington County Prison Museum. I ask for the senior discount and the reception lady says "not today ... admission is a dollar." We start our self tour and walk from floor to floor, just imagining what this jail must have been like in its day. I took many photos and guess what ... no ghosts, no shadows, mists, nothing ... LOL.I will pay to take the tour next time but it was an enjoyable way to spend an hour on a cloudy Saturday afternoon.

The prison tour is great, and the monthly lecture program is enlightening. Be sure to talk to the excellent museum attendant.

awesome. so historic. so memorable. the stories are awesome. the location of the prison is so cool also. that part of Mt. Holly is amazing!

So, it took us a little bit of time finding this. I think we were looking at the pink house across the street every time we passed it. You receive a nice self-guided tour brochure when you pay the minimal entry fee. What was most surprising about this place how long it was used. It is very well preserved and very easy to navigate. It is, however, not wheelchair accessible. People who struggle with stairs should be cautious when visiting the prison. Like many older buildings, there are a lot of steps to enter and steps to the basement and second floor. There is a nice little gift shop, too. Well worth an hour or so.

This place has all the makings of a super stellar haunted attraction but it had no thought behind it, was expensive and lacked imagination... I'm sure it's interesting during the rest of the year though for the regular prison tours...
