Located just ten minutes from the downtown area, the Julien Dubuque Monument marks the grave of the founder of the city. There is not enough space to recount all the stories about this man, so I'd suggest a visit to encyclopediadubuque.org and the entries on Julien Dubuque and the Julien Dubuque Monument. The scenery from the hilltop up and down the Mississippi River will give you plenty of opportunities to make great photographs. Have a picnic nearby.

The history of Dubuque is intriguing and wonderful. This monument is a great place to enjoy the scenery up and down the river. You can also see Dubuque from a unique perspective.

This historic place is a great place to take out of town guests. The view of The Mississippi River is great!

From the bluffs above the Mississippi, you will enjoy one of the best views of the Dubuque area and across the river to Illinois and Wisconsin. This is a great location. There's not much more than the views and hiking, but it's worth it! It's easy access from the parking lot to the look-out.

We found the park quite beautiful, visiting it in the fall with the autumn leaves and all the colors. Great vista views of the railroad trains and the river down below. A great place to take some scenic photos and learn a little bit about the history of the area.

The grave is a small tower on a bluff above the river, but it does give some of the best views of the river around there. Take your camera.

Tucked away on the south side of Dubuque and high on a bluff, the grave sites for Julien Dubuque and his wife showcase a magnificent view of the cirty of Dubuque to the north, East Dubuque, Illinois to the east, the Mississippi River valley and the Mines of Spain to the south. Paved roads to get there and a gentle walk from the parking lot to the gravesite at the edge of the bluff, and all just a short drive on Julien Dubuque drive into the MInes of Spain property. Bring your camera.

The Julien Dubuque Monument is a historic site overlooking the Mississippi at the burial site of Julien Dubuque, the first permanent European settler in Iowa. The site includes several historic markers and signage, explaining the history of the site as an area that has been occupied periodically by Native Americans for approximately 8,000 years. Julien Dubuque, a Frenchman working for Spain, made contact with the Native Americans and was granted permission to mine lead from the rich deposits in the area in 1780, and was later granted a Land Grant from Spain. Although Julien Dubuque died before the modern settlement that became the City of Dubuque was founded, it was named for Dubuque. The best part of this monument is the fantastic view up and down the Mississippi River from this bluff-top view, including most of downtown Dubuque. There are several great trails that explore the surrounding Mines of Spain recreation area, and if you are careful you can spot many of the historic relics in the woods, including foundations from previous settlements and native american burial grounds. This spot is great for tourists and locals to get away from the City and enjoy the outdoors to watch the river and eagles, have a picnic, or hike.

There is not much to see at the grave but it overlooks the Mississippi River. Great view of the area from high on the bluffs. The grave is in the Mines of Spain recreation area/park. Great walking and hiking trails.

Having seen the Monument from the riverboat trip, we were interested to see it from the bluff.Well worth driving out to - great view of the Mississippi without all the downtown and industrial clutter.

Definitely go the short distance to see this memorial - beautiful view of the Mississippi, too. Easy walking, places to sit down, and information on the area.

The grave site over looks the river and it's a beautiful area. The park is beautiful with lots of trails. You can drive and park pretty close to the grave which is good for those visitors who don't do a lot of walking.
