wahweap hoodos

Before writing my review, I checked how someone could have rated it poor. Well I guess being shot at would certainly color your experience. Go to Big Water and go north. Continue past the hatchery. We crossed Wahweap Creek. Today I would have crossed the creek in a two wheel drive. We had a 4 x 4. You hike up the creek for about 4 or 4.5 miles. There are hoodoos on the left (west.) Continue a little farther and see even neater hoodos on the left (west.) There are more hoodoos around the next alcove to the north. The pictures on tripadvisor are a good representation. Very unique location.

We hiked this wash trail about two years ago. It was a beautiful day and the hoodoos were truly a sight to see. The problem occurred when we were about 1.5 miles from the end of the hike. We heard shots that came from on top of the wash. As we approached where the shots came from, we saw two men on top of the wash. They looked to be target practicing. We were down in the wash and as we were passing them, I heard a shot and saw the sand in front of where I was walking burst. We were actually being shot at! We dove into some near bushes and this continued for about 5 minutes (shots were landing all around us) until we heard them drive away. We reported it, but never heard any follow up. I would not recommend this hike. Trip advisor is only allowing me to go back to Feb. 2014. We actually hiked it in March 2011 or 2010. I am giving it a poor mark due to the fact that the hike was wonderful, but being shot at was not.

As others described, park at the fish hatchery and head upstream. It is not a leisurely stroll, take water and prepare to get your feet wet and sandy if the stream is high enough. There is little to no shade and it is ~4.5 mile hike one way. We even came upon some free range cattle.Good news, the hike is well worth it. There are two separate areas, both on the west side of the wash. The hoodoos are very tall, multi colored and the number of them make you fell like you are on a different planet. Southern Utah is full of hidden surprises and this does not disappoint.

You have to be in good shape to go see the hoodoos, go to Big Water, Utah BLM to get a good map to the trailhead. Once at the trailhead get prepared to hike 3-4 miles in the Wahweap wash (mixture of rocks, sand, dirt, brush) just to get to the first set of hoodoos, then another mile or so to the acclaimed white ghost hoodoos where the famous "Tower of Silence" stands watch over the wash. No shade so take sun protectant, more water then you can carry and I wouldn't recommend hiking this in July or August because those are the monsoon months and if it storms up north, you will see the Wahweap wash flood within 3-4 hours depending on how much rain the clouds dump. I have heard that this natural marvel could be banned from any humans so don't sit, stand or anything else that could destroy or change to the formations, please.

Ein Naturschauspiel ohne gleichen. Etwas schwierig zu erreichen, aber dafür um so beeindruckender! Wer etwas Mut hat und nimmt sich ein SUV und fährt off-Road und läuft die letzten 1 1/2 Miles. Der Anblick ist unbeschreiblich, aber ein bisschen Mut gehört aber schon dazu. Und man muss sich vorbereiten!!!!

Der Rezeptionist unseres Hotels In Page gab uns diesen Tip für einen Tagesausflug abseits der Touristenströme - die Wahweap Hoodos nördlich von Big Water, einem kleinen Ort bereits in Utah. Er gab uns auch eine detaillierte Wegbeschreibung, ohne die wir nie ans Ziel gekommen wären.In Big Water biegt von von der US 89 auf die Ethan Allen Rd. und später links in die Fish Hatchery Rd. ab. Am Ende der Straße, in der Nähe der Fischzuchtbecken, kann man das Fahrzeug stehen lassen. Diese Strecke ist mit normalen Autos befahrbar.Bald, nach ca. 1/2 Meile, erreicht man die Stelle, wo drei Creeks zusammentreffen - von links der Coyote Creek, von rechts der Nipple Creek - der dritte und mittlere Creek kommt von Norden - der Wahweap Creek. Diesen marschiert man nun ungefähr 4,2 Meilen entlang. Man benötigt eine gute Kondition und einen Riesenvorrat an Wasser - der Wash ist voller tiefem Sand, schattenlos und kurvig. Die Sonne brennt erbarmungslos herunter, die Wanderung ist äußerst anstrengend.Die Hoodoos befinden sich im Wash etwas oberhalb des Flußbetts, direkt an der Abbruchkante. Insgesamt gibt es drei Gruppen von Hoodos - die spektakulärsten sind die sogenannten "White Ghosts". Die Hoodos schauen wirklich wie weiße Geister aus, mit einem Hut aus Schokolade und bis zu 6 m hoch. Man sollte nicht zu viel zwischen den Hoodos herumlaufen, denn dadurch zerstört man die kryptobiotische Kruste - eine Schicht aus lebenden Organismen - Zyanobakterien, Algen, Flechten und Moosen. dieser Belag schützt den empfindlichen Boden vor Erosion.Wir benötigten für den Hike und den Fotostop über 5 Stunden. Wir starteten schon bald am Morgen und begegneten auf dieser Tour keinem einzigen Menschen.GPS: die "Towers of Silence", die mächtigsten Hooodos, liegen auf N 37°09'749" W 111°42'708".
