Right across the road from the firetower trail head. Prayer flags surround the property. The shrine room is beautiful. Great book shop. The address printed above is wrong. See Kelly304 for the correct address and phone number. Worth the drive up the mountain.

I love the energy here and the huge shrine room is one of the most beautiful I've seen in the U.S. If you go, arrive in time to take the shrine room tour. Ingrid gives a great history (and a great short Dharma talk).

First of all, this is correct address of this place. 335 Mead Mountain Road,Woodstock NY 12498and phone number is (845)679-5906. My husband me had hard time to find this beautiful monastery because of wrong address, but we luckly found this well established wonderful temple. This temple offers many buddhism practices and seminars also has guest rooms for people who want to stay in temple. I definitely want to attend one of the practice course in this year. You don't have to be a buddhist to be in this place.Just sit down for a while and feel your mind with deep breaths.

We visited the monastery on a weekday. Unfortunately, there are tours only on weekends. Nevertheless we were able to enter the monastery grounds and go inside the temple, as a previous Trip Advisor visitor assured us. There was an unseen monk beating a drum and chanting in an room off to the side of the front entrance. The inside of the temple is an amazing space with brightly colored decorations, candles burning amid an atmosphere of quiet and peace. There was only one bathroom available to visitors in a reception area at the front. Since there was a line at the time we visited we opted to wait till we were back in Woodstock. We did have an encounter with a Black bear as we were heading to our car. A bear the size of a tall dog walked into the parking lot. Fortunately an SUV pulled into the driveway behind it and the bear abled further up the driveway, alongside the monastery and into the woods. We made a run for the car and were glad to get to its safety. Later when we were in town we spoke to a couple of ladies in a local shop about it and they said not many people they knew had seen a bear so, in retrospect, we had a pretty unusual experience. It certainly added something special to our visit.

If you are in Woodstock, take the time to visit this Buddhist temple. You do not have to be a Buddhist to appreciate the location of this mountaintop monastery and its beautiful views of the surrounding area.Whether you opt for a quick tour or a weekend course, this Buddhist monastery is well worth a visit.

We were lucky to make the weekend tour with Ingrid. She is a wealth of information on the Monastery and Buddhism. I particularly enjoyed how she was able to use metaphors to help us understand the fundamentals of Buddhism. The Monastery is located in a beautiful spot on the top of a mountain and most welcome to visitors.

The location is beautiful, the setting so peaceful, and the residents so warm and welcoming. The shrine is open to the public to view and/or for meditation. It's quite lovely.

There was a private event taking place the day we visited it, therefore couldn't get in, but the surroundings and the views are baeautiful.

If you're in Woodstock its a fun little stop to go and see. Not too much to do there though- but it is conveniently located by the trail head for Overlook Mountain- which you should do.

It' a nice monastery. Wouldn't go as far as using strong, descriptive words like breathtaking, or spectacular, but it is definitely very cool. Mainly because it is located in the Catskills, near Woodstock. There must be all kinds of good energies brewing in that area with rich, colorful history. But back to the monastery. Of course it is serene and calm. It is beautiful in its simplicity and is a very friendly place. Things are very quiet over there, one couldn't find a better place to build a Buddhist Monastery. The interior is very interesting as well, as expected, with Buddha being a center piece. Very interesting place to visit.

I am not very familiar with Buddhism, but on a beautiful autumn day a friend and I decided to drive up to Catskill Mountains and took a hilly road outside of Woodstock to the Tibetan Buddhist Monastery. With hundreds of colorful flags not only outside a geogeous picture, but also inside this magnificent Buddhist temple we were overwhelmed by all the art and intriguing symbols as well as the bright and happy colours all around. The free tours on Saturday and Sunday are really a recommendation, in a very nice and gentle way you get an easy to understand introduction. Glad that we came here.

If you want to see a magnificent Buddhist temple, and all the art and intriguing symbols without going to Tibet, this is the place. There are free tours on Saturday and Sunday at 1 or so, and you can get free meditation introduction after your tour if you'd like. They do not do a religion sales job either. The giant gold Buddha in the central medition hall is a sight to experience. The folks there are informative and welcoming, well worth a ride up Mead's Mountain Road. Right next to it is the Old Catholic Church of Father Francis, a mentor to many famous Woodstockers.

The monastery as at the top of a winding, hilly road outside of Woodstock and at the bottom of Overlook Mountain. The grounds are a bit unkempt, as are what appear to be dormitories,. On the other hand, the inside is beautiful, ornate, calming and offers a good respite, if you allow yourself to sit quietly and take it all in.

It is difficult to review religious places. But it appears that the place was very welcoming and worth visiting if you are in the area. Come and see for yourself. Parking for trailhead to the mountaintop is next to the temple – so you can do both – visiting the site and hike to the mountain as long as you like. The trail is obviously uphill, but it is a dirty road – so walking is easy.
