Very lovely to wander around, a bit sobering when you recall that this was the site of one of the bloodiest battles of the war. Not too much to see, but worth going to. See if you can find a ranger to talk to you.

Having an ancestor that fought at this battle made the site a priority stop for me. The battlefield has a large obelisk on it to commemorate the ambush of Patriots by the British and their First Nations allies during the Revolutionary War. The battle took place near the area of the monument and you need to walk the trails to get a feel for the site. Your first stop should be the ranger station and if he/she is in get them to give you a quick familiarization of the area to enhance your experience. In my case, the ranger was able to identify the positions of my ancestor's company during the battle. The site itself is peaceful and quiet, a fitting memorial to what has been deemed "the bloodiest battle of the war". It is a place to pause and reflect on the deaths of those who fought on both sides of the Revolutionary War.

We went to Oriskany Battlefield to see the place where a few of my ancestors died in battle. There is a trail that took us along the route the militia took in 1777.Along the trail there are indicators showing where the militia was ambushed and where they regrouped on high ground. There is a beautiful obelisk monument with the names of the known soldiers that died in the battle on it. As well as another pretty monument at the end of the trail raised for the unknown soldiers of the battle. The park ranger knew a lot about the battle and the area and helped us a lot in our search for our ancestors. It was a great day.

We arrived after the tours ended for the day ( 4pm) but we were welcome to enter and walk the grounds, pay our respects at the monument and read the markers along the way that really taught us a lot about the Revolutionary War battle that took place there. Truly Hallowed ground and worth the 10 minute drive to visit!

This is a great site to visit for its history. Make sure to walk the trails around the site and read the signage pointing out what happen where. After touring the battlefield stop in the ranger station...the ranger we met, Dave, was a wealth of knowledge. He also directed us to Fort Stanwix which we hadn't planned on touring originally, but was wonderful in tandem with Oriskany. They have really great reenactment films at Fort Stanwix of the Battle of Oriskany. Visit Oriskany first if you can and then visit Fort Stanwix in Rome, NY.

This a National Historical Monument on the actual battlefield were the British and Indians tried to ambush Patriots as they passed through this ravine. It is hallowed ground actually. Over 500 soldiers are buried here in mass graves. The monument was erected in their honor. There is a foot path you can take through the ravine to another memorial on the opposite side. The path is to the far right of the entrance.

You could easily drive by this quiet little park. Don't.The history of our country was altered forever by the battle that took place at this site. And it was bloody indeed. For more than 200 years this has been known as hallowed ground, with the property eventually put into the hands of NYS and given National Monument status. The visitor center is small, with limited summer hours ,but with the most helpful park employees. The monuments and markers give you lots of background regarding events. No matter what time of year you visit, you can park at the gates and walk the grounds. Take the time to sit at the monuments and follow the path into the ravine. Consider how many different people were here, the horrific hours, and the sacrifice. We rarely have such an opportunity in our hurry-up world.

Very small site.A small visitor center, a monument (an obelisk) and some historical markers are about what you are going to see.But...After visiting Fort Stanwix, it really adds the the story. The exibit in the visitor center is interesting and the park ranger is very knowledgeable and outgoing.I recommend you make a short stop here if you have the time after completing your visit of Fort Stanwix.

There is a monument, visitors center and markers. The park ranger was extremely knowledgeable and personable and offered alot of historical information. Good history lesson and a beautiful setting. Visit the Oriskany Museum while you are in the area also.
