The whole island is about 18.5 acres and has only two lots. the lighthouse sits on the smaller of the two which contains 1.5 acres and is owned by city of newport. the rest of the island (about 17 acres) was acquired by the rose island lighthouse foundation (june 25, 1999). the foundation keeps the lighthouse property open year round from 10 am to 4 pm -- but it's not so easy to get there except during the summer months when the jamestown ferry operates on a scheduled daily basis. all other times of the year the lighthouse foundation's boat takes overnighters and volunteers to the lighthouse aboard "starfish" (our new 32-foot jarvis newman lobster boat). school and group tours are offered by appointment from april through october. individual public tours are limited to july and august when the ferry runs daily and our guides are on site.Walking around the island is prohibited during nesting season which is from april 1 - august 15. outside of those dates, people may walk around the entire island, but you must stay on the beaches. as you walk around the island or view it from a boat on the water, you will see the dilapidated, buildings from world wars i and ii, which were used to store explosives. many of them are in danger of collapsing and it is very unsafe to explore in or even around them. remember: this is private property owned by the foundation which is required to protect it according to our deeded conservation easement. do not trespass. Here is the site that you can see the bedrooms & book for a weekend or a week, If you stay the week you stay on the 2nd floor. people staying overnight at the lighthouse may paddle the foundation's kayak around the island or take binoculars up into the tower to see what’s happening, but from april 1 to august 15, rose island is strictly for the birds! in the winter, from late october to early april, you can often see harbor seals on the east side of the island at citing rock, which in the warmer months is surrounded by extensive underwater eelgrass beds. The apartment is $150 per night or a room is $75 a night. The phone number to stay here is 401-847-4242

This is not a big oooh and aaah place but it's a decent way to spend a couple of hours. The boat ride over affords you the opportunity to see some of those enormous mansions from the other side. If you're a photo buff Rose Island's lighthouse will have you snapping postcard style pics. The volunteers were very nice and I applaud all the people who had a hand in restoring that piece of history. We enjoyed the day but be aware if you get sea sick there was a tremendous amount of chop to the water in October, so the boat was really rocking.

It is beautiful, it is scenic, and it is historic, who could ask for anything more??!! The volunteers here are dedicated and so very friendly. They know so much about their wonderful light and they love to tell their visitors all of the wonderful stories. Don't forget to hunt for some sea glass while you are there.

Spent one night here. It was well worth it. Absolutely wonderful time. Foggy next morning made for great photo ops. Nothing negative could possibly be said about the experience. Nice website gives good details on a one night or one week visit.

Took a tender on over to the Rose Island Lighthouse for a private clambake. Toured the lighthouse, and enjoyed a really nice evening. Was fortunate to speak w/folks who were staying in a room on this Island (away from the lighthouse) who were enjoying their stay. That was a bit to rustic for my taste as no electricity and rest room separate from the room. I would go again for a pleasant afternoon (or clambake) should the opportunity arise.

I travel to Newport once a year from Texas, my first stop is Rose! I've come with both friends and family, from hanging out by a campfire at night during the fall to having a glass of wine in the summer looking out over the water lite by the Newport Bridge. Every experience has been wonderful. Rose is unique and great for relaxing. I would highly recommend staying in the Fog Horn building, you wake up in the mornings surrounded by a beautiful view. AND You get the best captain! Chris is extremely knowledgeable about the light house and island.

I love coming to the rose Island Lighthouse for the "dog romp". Of course these don't happen in the summer because the land is protected for the birds, however, it is such a fun experience. The Rose Island lighthouse teams up with a local store or rescue group to put on these fun activities for you and your furry friend. Typically boats leave from Fort Adams and you get to spend the afternoon on the island with a boat full of people and their dogs. Dogs run free and get to swim, while the lighthouse offers tours and snacks, including a bonfire. Totally fun and if you can get tickets, do it!

I have stayed overnight here several times. Well worth the money! Better to splurge and go for the upstairs apartment, for many more amenities, such as a bathroom.

I have visited the Rose Island where you can walk the perimeter at the proper tide, and non-nesting seasons. It is very interesting as the island used to have a navy installment and still has a barricks. The Rose Island Lighthouse can be rented and you can stay, but you have to "work" the facility (limited work really). My daughter stayed there with her girl scout troop and had a blast.

Rose Island is a lovely lighthouse! It is beautiful and the views from the lighthouse are stunning. Be sure to stop here during your Newport trip and see a little pice of classic New England. Don't forget your camera!

Enjoyed a Save the Bay tour with friendly, well educated guides with info about the history of the lighthouse and the habits of the playful seal visitors.

Taking a trip to the Rose Island Lighthouse is a fine experience. The light overlooks Narraganset Bay,Newport, and Jamestown. When I walked into the lighthouse, I felt as if I was back in the eighteen hundreds. Your guides will even let you go to the light chamber at the very top.If you have ever thought of being a lighthouse keeper, you have he opportunity to do so. Rose Island can set you and your family up for an overnight, or one week stay. It's a totally unique B&B.

A great way to get out on the water (either the Newport/Jamestown Ferry or the Rose Island launch) and take in the beautiful views of Newport Harbor and Narragansett Bay. The Light House quarters have been restored and work is being done on the light beacon itself. Lots of history here. Worth the trip!

A great place to visit or stay overnight. Access is by boat. In season boat tours are available from one of the commercial boat tour operators. The Lighthouse foundation also owns their own boat, the starfish.
