plimoth grist mill

The mill was interesting and the guide was knowledgeable and explained things well, but we just thought it lacked originality, and the restoration had taken something away from the original mill.

Well worth a vist...who knew corn was interesting. The staff was very nice and answered all our questions. Kim kept my daughter engaged which was very nice.

We had not planned to go here at all and almost didn't buy the package ticket that included admission to the Grist Mill. We ended up deciding that it was just a few dollars more so no big deal if we didn't end up going there.The boat turned out to be a bit of a let down--we were on and off in about 15 minutes--so we decided to go check out the grist mill since it wasn't far away. We are so glad we did!The man we first met upstairs was very knowledgeable and informative. You could tell he enjoys sharing this piece of history with others and welcomed us as if we were guests in his home. He then referred us to the next guide downstairs who would continue the tour. That's where we truly hit the jackpot!The second tour guide was very good but apologized because he wasnt' sure of the answer to one of our questions and he got someone else to help out. He explained that he usually works at Plimoth Plantation and was there filling in for someone else. So, we asked him about what he does there--turned out he's one of the villagers! We had a great chat with him and he told us a lot of interesting info that we missed because the plantation wasn't well staffed that day.

Jenny Grist Mill was build by my husband's 13th great grandfather so this was an interesting visit for us. The building had burned down a couple of times, but the guide indicated that the foundation was the original. That gave my husband a nice link to his ancestry. The process of grinding the corn was fascinating. We even took home some of the corn that had been stone ground there. A nice place to visit.

A recent replica of the original mill that was built in 1637 by the first settlers in Plymouth. The guide Michael was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic and a trained miller and we learnt more about corn milling than we knew possible! A pretty setting, with moving waterwheel. Also free parking, although within easy walking distance from the Main Street.

Interesting to see an actual grist mill. Area is very scenic also. We took some photos. Location has a gift shop as well.

Our experienced host was very knowledgeable and entertaining in his detailed presentation on the operation of this historic and still functioning mill. We purchased two 1.5 lbs bags of milled corn meal and three boxes of delicious handmade fudge at the gift shop at the Grist Mill. Well worth the visit!

This is a relatively small attraction packed with information on how the grist mill worked and its history. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable. The mill still works and they grind the corn twice a week and sell the output. We were not there on one of those days and that would be interesting to see. Pleasant stop, takes less than an hour and has a modest admission price ($6 for adults).

This tour of the oldest mill in America was very interesting. You will learn many historical and scientific facts that will give you an appreciation of some of the first American Pioneers.

Unfortunately, we arrived only 1/2 an hour before the mill was to close; we'll have to go back! We've toured several mills as a homeschooling family, and this one has, by far, the best hands-on opportunities for children to see just how it works. On the lower level, there's a gorgeous wooden water wheel in a water table, corn to grind in a large mortar and pestle just like those you see in the homes in Plimoth, ground corn to sift, a model grist mill with cut-away walls (like a dollhouse) so you can see how everything's connected...Wonderful!!

This grist mill has been here as long as this country has. a short tour will explain how the Pilgrims got and processed their food.

Although the grist mill was not operating the day of our visit it was still very worth while. We talked with the Miller, she was quite informative and a fountain of knowledge about this mill and many others of the period. We were very impressed with the workmanship of the mill and all the accessory equipment. They have a cut-away model of the mill and waterwheel to help understand the process. Very enjoyable visit, especially if you're the least bit mechanically inclined.

Actual working grist mill. The docent (Miller) was very informative , and explained how the mill works, and all its inticate parts. He was very knowledgable and made the experience very enjoyable. After his explanation we went down to the lower floor where the shutes deliver the product, and there was a show, touch and feel display. Gift shop and restaurant was on premises.

Arrived at the beginning of the tour. Got to see how the stones grind corn to make grits and meal. The staff was knowledgeable and friendly. Toured the exhibit downstairs and the gift shop where you can get snacks.The outside of the mill is in a beautiful park like setting.
