Located in the central city suburb of Western Springs, access to Auckland Zoo is easy and only ten minutes from the CBD. The zoo has the largest collection of native and exotic animals in New Zealand. Set over 17 hectares of parkland, the zoo's enclosures are large and the recently developed boardwalk 'Pridelands', through the giraffes and emus area to the elephants is interesting. The old elephant house is no longer active for any activity at the zoo, and you can only hope you will see the big cats. My visit was disappointingly lacking sightings of tigers, lions and cheetahs! The most entertaining section are the adorable meerkats! They work their way underground through tunnels to a couple of different exhibit areas. If there are none at one display area, they could all be around the corner at the next. When they are active, the meerkats are the stars of the show and well worth spending quite some time enjoying their antics.Other animals include the lemur, red panda (coaxed down from the tree by zoo staff for feeding and was great to see it up close), Tasmanian devils, again not sighted, the Australian Walkabout with kangaroos and emus.Various animal adventures are available to get the opportunity to learn more and be in touch with the animals at the zoo. There is wildlife roaming the walkways such as chickens and roosters, ducks, and big seagulls.Facilities are very good. One big souvenir gift shop at front entrance, and two small cafes providing well priced refreshments. The main rotunda is a meeting point in the centre of the park, with a fountain and NZ coat of arms.Zoo volunteers were everywhere and very helpful if you cannot understand the map, as I couldn't and their was a distinct lack of signage as far as I could see.Entrance to Pridelands is just to the right of the main ticket box, but you need to access through the ticket/photo area first apparently. The main food hall is Darwins, with a good selection of foods and takeaways. There is a lot of walking in this zoo, and various exhibits and displays and encounters, for the kids there is Kidzone, and a play area, and a good day out.Taxi from CBD to the zoo is $21.Well worth visiting, but as with zoos anywhere the animals decide if they want to come out and play, so you take your chances on what you'll see, but something will happen and make it a good day.Sadly I only saw one elephant and wasn't sure if that's all there is at Auckland Zoo at Elephant Clearing.
Had a great day exploring Auckland Zoo, highlight had to be the elephant having his daily walk around the zoo! Clean and spacious, an all round brilliant day out.
Very much a modern zoo with animal feeding throughout the day. Kids are encouraged to get close and feed the giraffes and you can get real close to most of the animals. Plenty of big animals (elephants, tigers and lions) and loads of local inhabitants. Good variety of hot and cols meals and snacks and all reasonably priced. Staffing seems to be made up off volunteers who are keen to point you in the right direction. A good day out for all ages.
First time here and loved it, cant wait to go back. Only down fall was collecting the photos at the end. i didn't get ours cause they mucked it up, they need a better system. Was told at entrance when we had photo done they would be ready and waiting for us when we left but they werent. they couldnt find our photo, we had to wait 15mins to get it printed and with kids on a hot day and youve just walked around a big zoo kids are grumpy and dont wana stand around waiting. This happened to a few people as there were a few grumpy people standing around waiting. was dissapointed at this.
Lovely zoo. We went twice. It was not too cagey. And it was well laid out. We did go on a sunny day not too sure if it would have been as good on a rainy day. Food was overpriced and no real healthy choices for kids. We went twice, always a good sign.
Nice, but limited animal diversity. Their conservation all and sustainability displays are second to none.Good zoo, but not world class.
Its a nice enough zoo, well laid out, and not overly expensive. But we didnt see many animals - mostly Australian ones, and in all honesty we have them in the paddock out the front. But it was a nice day to wander around in the sun, and the Merkats kept use amused for a while.
I have always loved Auckland Zoo, it's so beautiful and well set up and the animals all seem happy in their enclosures! This time myself and my son were hugely annoyed by the hundreds of school kids running rampant around the zoo on their school trip!! They pushed my 4 year old son out of the way and shouted loudly at the animals! For the price you pay you should be able to enjoy your visit and unfortunately this time I didn't.
Overall we rated 4/5 there was rain on the morning we went and there could have been more areas to get cover... overall pleasant and well landscaped though
