If you go up to the tower you can see most beautiful view in the town. Must visit place if you go to Vyborg.

Old Castle looks unusual for Russia. It was founded by Swedish warrior and now it the one West-European fortress in Russia. The Castle is the heart of Vyborg. It was reconstructed several times and now it looks neglected. Don't forget In Russia museums bad funded. Anyway visit this place and feel the breath of history. Go to the top of the Castle view from it is amazing!

You definitely need to climb to the top of the tower when you are in Vyborg - this is the best (and probably the only one..) viewpoint - you'll see the whole town from here. And of course, the castle itself is quite interesting; there are also some exhibitions that you can visit.

This Castle is the heart of Vyborg. Basically town was built only because of the Castle. Mandatory to see if you are visiting Vyborg. As I know this is just only one medieval castle in whole Russia. Enter is for free. All other entertainments paid separately. Inside you can visit several museums and workshop of historical restoration. And of course the Tower - view from it is terrific.

Very interesting. If someone is interested in the history, this is the palace to go. Centuries of history!

As a Finn, I was keen on seeing this historical site, especially the museum. As some reviewers have stated, it now belongs to Russians, so don't expect "one booth all possible tickets, everything in English" service - there was one ticket booth to go in and then another for selling other tickets. Some Russian language skills helped me a lot.The museum was excellent, especially the Finnish history part which showed old photos and items as well as explanatory signs. Everything in Finnish, English and Russian. The museum had few floors and other parts contained e.g. Swedish history, natural history and some world war items. The tower (separate ticket needed) you had to climb 50 meters or so by stairs - the reward was excellent city view. The tower itself was in sad condition. Be aware of your head.

I'm sure this is a very nice castle, but I wouldn't know, because the lady in the ticket booth wouldn't let me in! I only had a 100 ruble note on me, but she demanded exactly a 10 ruble note, which is the entry price. As some russians unfortunately do, she started to ignore me when it became clear I couldn't pay the exact entry price. I begged and said I could pay 50 rubles to get in, to which she replied something in Russian with an irritated tone, accompanied by a waving hand gesture towards the exit, basically saying "get out of here". Pretty much the only reason I stopped in Vyborg on my way to St. Petersburg, and I wasn't able to see it. Disappointed!

The great thing about this castle is the authenticity. Of course, there are parts that have been remodeled and updated (to hold the structure together, mostly.) But the history of this castle is fantastic. To imagine walking in the same footsteps as the medieval knights of Sweden, really impressive! Of course, this style of castle is not Russian, so you won't see anything else like it there. This is the most easterly "European" medieval castle that you can find, so it's certainly interesting. The walk to the top is a bit scary, especially if you are expecting modern safety standards. I didn't think I was going to die, but the old stairs did get my heart pounding. The views are amazing, as others have said. The city looks amazing from the tower. I wish the city was actually as nice as it looked from the tower. The castle tour was definitely the best thing about Vyborg, as thecity itself is quite sad and in absolute ruins. The city and the castle are worth the trip from SPG. It's about 2 hours to get there and the history of the city really is amazing. Even with a russian tour guide, we had a lot of trouble finding a place to eat. I would recommend bringing food, seeing what you need to see, and then heading back to SPG.

I've been to Vyborg for a day trip while staying in St. Petersburg. And well Vyborg itself is a nice small town, but the castle is really the highlight of the city. From the tower you have an awesome view and the castle itself is old and impressive, ok you can't compare it to Peterhof or Catherine's Palace in Pushkin, but if you are for a longer time in St. Petersburg Vyborg is a place you should see

We went there whilst it was snowing and made the scary climb to the top but it was worth it for the views alone!! Nice being able to try on the medieval clothing also. And oddly enough the coffee in the vending machine was the best I'd had in Russia !

In fact, it is a very old castle with towers, museums, etc. The view is fantastic. Especially for the slaves of camera. In summer the usually are held performances, including those by the Mariinsky theatre.

Vyborg Castle is an amazing place! It is a medieval castle in fact! Nowadays it is dirty and old but this do not take out its essence! By its tower you can get a great view of Vyborg city! This Castle is the best part of the city!

If you come to Vyborg you just should visit Vyborg Castle. Viborg Castle was one of the three major castles of Finland. It was built as the easternmost outpost of the medieval Kingdom of Sweden in 1293. In the castle there is small museums and an observation deck on the Tower of St. Olav - tickets are cheap (we paid 10 rub for enter in Castle, 20 rub for one museum and 40 rub for Tower). Very good walking in good weather and wonderful photos from observation desk. One negative moment. I was surprised that in the booth at the entrance can only buy a ticket to the Castle (but not the museums and the tower). At the same time, when we came to the tower, we learned what to buy tickets here too it is impossible - it is necessary to go back to the entrance and buy a ticket at the box office of museum near the entrance (ticket office is small, not comfortable and with a queue of course).
