This is an uphill walk, so it was disappointing to find it fenced off by ugly wire fences. There is clearly extensive work going on. What can be seen from the road is not worth the effort of going, and I would suggest you ensure that it is reopened before making the effort.

If I remember right this Byzantine church was built in 7th century. It's in very bad condition these days but ongoing archaeological excavations providing lots of valuable information. Sad thing is, all frescoes of Jesus, Mary and saints are heavily damaged because of human & weather factors. But it's definetely worths a visit if you're in Sinop. It's not far from the city center, you only have to walk for 10 mins or so...

Balatlar Kilisesi de kazı çalışmaları henüz çok yeni. Bu yüzden yerlerde kazılarak oluşturulmuş odacıklar ve hendekler var. Kazı çalışmaları bittiğinde büyük bir oluşum meydana çıkacağı şimdiden belli. İçindeki ikonaları ve heykelleri sinop müzesinde bulabilirsiniz.

Sadece 4 yıldız kazılan kilisenin şimdiden 3 kat yerleşimi olduğu tespit edilmiş.Yavaş yavaş şekil almaya başlamış. Ancak etrafındaki yerleşimden sıyrılması lazım yoksa heybeti ortaya çıkmaz.Hıristiyanlığın en önemli kiliselerinden biri olduğu söyleniyor.
