The gun collection was on display at the Davis hotel in downtown Claremore and my family made regular stops during the 40's and 50's. Every available space was taken up by gun displays, even the walls of the coffee shop. When Mr. Davis died, the collection was put in storage and an estimated 1/2 was stolen over the years before the new building could be built. It is still impressive, but like the old saying goes:"Ya shudda been here yesterday."
Gun lovers will love this place. You will learn lots about Guns, Our Country's history and how this country was built.
On our road trip south we saw a billboard for this museum...were very excited about it so planned trip to accommodate visit on way back north. Spent night in Claremore in order to visit here, and after all of this effort, find out the museum is closed for the month of January 2015 for remodeling AFTER we check in to our hotel! It would only be considerate to put a banner on the billboard stating it was closed Jan 2015! RUDE and inconsiderate!
I'm really surprised at the amount of guns they do have here! There are rows and rows of different calibers, models, etc. A serious fanatic could really spend all day here. I did miss one room because they were doing a blood drive the day we visited, but I'm fairly sure it wouldn't have been a problem if we had glanced in there quickly. Museum fees -- They accept donations at the moment. Well, worth tossing them a few bucks for the upkeep. This is definitely a museum that is fit for older children on up. Small children would probably find themselves rather bored!
I went to this museum understanding it to be a gun museum. But it is so much more. It shows the diversity of the items J. M. Davis was interested in and collected. The history here is well seeing.
This place is a paradise they have guns ,knifes , BB guns, saddles ,Cains, horns ,bullets, handcuffs,Tank, the list is endless i have been here over 12 times i don,t think i have seen it all yet
From toy guns to an army tank this modern museum has it all. Every kind of gun imaginable is displayed here along with many other interesting things. Gun's, knives, swords, ammo of all shapes, sizes, age, and country of origin are found here. I don't care much about guns and I even found this place interesting. My 10 yr old boy was in heaven! Located right on Route 66 and close to downtown flea markets if you want to drop your wife off there and go see the guns! :)Free entry but donations welcome.
From BB guns to an Army tank, and everything in between, this museum charts the history of firearms. A real gem of firearm history.
I have visited this collection since it was a dusty display in the old Mason Hotel. The building it is now housed in gives it the showcase it deserves. If you like history, firearms or just seeing interesting things, you should enjoy the collection
There is so much history in one place! Love how there is so much variety for everyone who visits! My fiancé who is a gun aficionado was so excited and was able to give detail on most of the weapons there. I personally like the display showing the different weapons, nooses and other items from specific "bandits" and other outlaws from the true wild west.
My husband read about this while planning our road trip. We went and loved it. Even if your not into guns there's so many other items. We actually went two different days.
Wow. Over 10,000 guns. Over 50,000 other items to our understanding, e.g., musical instruments, recruiting posters, beer steins, swords, hand cuffs, hanging nooses, and more. I honestly felt some degree of vertigo. It was dizzying. Overwhelming.
We first saw this collection back in 1959 when it was displayed on the walls of the Davis Hotel, which is now, sadly gone from the scene. The hotel, had a coffee shop, as well, and there were guns fastened to the walls from the chair rail all the way to the ceilings, in the hotel, as you went up the stairs, as well. You could see on the smoke stained walls, where the occasional gun was removed. Mr. Davis, disliked thieves, but had many guns, so it didn't seem to bother him much.. In some of the upstairs rooms, he had handguns and old muskets and rifles by the 55 gallon barrel full.. you should'a seen it yourself!!! Now the collection is clean and nice, and displayed in handsome cabinets, but at least half of his '59 inventory is either not displayed or vanished.
I can't believe there are that many guns in one place! Sooo many!! And then there's swords and pipes and saddles, steins. Just lots of stuff. Very interesting though. And very attractive the way things are displayed.
I was pleasantly surprised that Mr. Davis did not simply collect arms. There are also musical instruments, military posters, taxidermy, furniture, etc. No fault of the museum, I found this place overwhelming for a novice arms aficionado. If you know your weapons, I could easily see a person spending three or more hours. For someone like me, it became overwhelming after about 40 minutes.
