I stopped in Hood River to see the Port and Hood River Waterfront Park. There are some very nice "statues", fun playgrounds, a swimming beach, and places to go wind surfing. There is also a nice walking path. One can also fish. One can also bring along one's dog. With it being a port, there are of course boats as well.Parking is free and by the park.

This was a sweet town to walk around in for an hour plus, to take in the architecture, the views of the Columbia River, the train and the funky vibe the region. We loved just hanging out at the train depot and watching the passenger trains whiz by.The murals on the building were all a blast from the past and this a unique part of Oregon. I will go back to this area in the winter months for more fun and recreation.

The wonderful Sunshine Bakery building - 1880's - has been beautifully repurposed and remodeled into the Quenette Winery. Even if you're not an oenophile check out this outstanding architecture and design

If you want to learn paddleboarding or you're experienced, there is something for everyone in Hood river. On non-windy days, it's a great thing to try while in town.

There is a great park for kids, a swimming area in the Columbia, restaurants, and it is always fun to watch the kite surfers.

Most people that visit Hood River,go for the outdoor activities, and the Port of Hood River has done an excellent job diversifying its excellent waterfront sites .There is the marina, and the beach access sites . The Hood River Bridge isthe cash machine that funds it all ,but bring a small car to cross it --lol Too bad that the Port has to place its main office and heavy equipment at the most prime real estate spot, right next to the bridge. Hey Port, why dont you lease thatout to some capitalist that knows how to make money ? Ever hear of a restaurant/bar combination ?

The marina is ok and there are a variety of activities to keep you or your children busy including wind surfing and lessons are also available, the Gorge is the wind surfing capital of the United States and people flock here seasonally to take advantage of the abundant gusty days. If that isn't your cup of death defying deeds there are other tamer ways to spend your time here in this bountiful area that produces huge quantities of fruit including the best pears I've ever eaten and let us not forget the cherries that are so tempting as you see them in huge clusters on the trees by June. It also has a tour through the " Fruit Loop " 35 miles long through these scenic orchards that I was luck even to meet someone last spring that took me horseback riding through this stunning sight as the petals fall from the trees as if snow flakes. Also no trip to Hood River is complete without a drive along the Historic Columbia River Highway that was the only way to reach this area before the I-84 was built, unfortunately I would not risk driving my 30' recreation vehicle along this hairpin turning highway but by car it should be quite enjoyable, also in all stop by the Chamber of Commerce also located in the marina and pick up some travel brochures that include maps and enjoy the local area.
