Actually was able to walk through the garage where they were working on the locomotives. Way cool! You also get to walk around where various ages, and kinds of trains are stored.

great rail tour of local area; special trips on Halloween and Christmas (Polar Express). You can even stay overnight at the station.

What great fun to spend 3 days on all types of steam gear. Great photo opportunities and people that love what they do. Mark and his crew couldn't be any more hospitable. It was a little cold do dress accordingly however. A good time!

for the time we were there, this museum was closed. But we meandered around the train station which is very picturesque. Trains still run with tourists.

Toured the Nevada Northern Railway Museum, took the afternoon ride to the copper mining area and were greeted by a light snow during the trip. The upstairs museum is filled with amazing pictures and history of the NNRM. Wander the grounds and check out the engine house, peek into the window of the RIP building to see the steam locomotive undergoing repairs. An absolute must see for train enthusiasts or history buffs in general.

This place is truly a step back in time! The deposit and the rail yard are great! They even allow you to freely wander around in the old locomotive shop while there are repairs being done on the old trains!.....then you can go on a old steam locomotive ride down the tracks! Around haloween there is a ghost train you can ride....very cool! And then at cristmas, the polar express..,a train ride to the north pole! Highly recomended!

Take the included tour as well as riding the trains. Our timing was off and the steam train tickets were sold out. However a really knowledgeable guide walked us through the building where they made the massive components like wheel bearings one piece at a time. He discussed how expensive and the years involved to restore these old steam trains. They have a great collection for sure. They snow blower was incredible to be up close to and hard to imagine what it must have sounded / looked like coming down the tracks.

The family and I had a great time! We were well taken care of, the weather was great, the train was made up with all the decorations, the cast of characters were great and the ride with all the Halloween feel was the best.

We have been traveling through Ely, never stopping for several years. This time we stopped and looked around. This Railway ride and museum is similar to the train ride experience we had in Sedona, Arizona several years ago with many differences. There are many volunteer around, willing to give you historical, mechanical or just plain directions. The rides power source varies from steam engine pulled train to diesel engine. We were there on a diesel day. The ghosts that will be on the train ride in October were missing from this trip. We opted to ride the open bench seat car near the front of the train. We travelled down Hwy. 50 canyon, through two very dark tunnels, past the active silver mine , abandoned "ghost town" and back again. There are snacks and drinks available for purchase, but we took our own water. The on-going informational talk by the engineer was just that. We enjoyed the beauty in this high, white pine area which is filled with rock formations in the mountain sides. Where some may see nothing - others may be awed. We retired to the indoor 'luxury' train cars for the return ride. There were kids and moderately handicapped people on our train. The walk through museums include the regular museum and an engine museum. The museum grounds are multi-level and may be difficult for those in wheel chairs - so ask before you pay.

It is always interesting to visit a railway museum. This one is nicely organized and offers daily train rides. They also have a nice gift store. Everything is laid out very well.

If you like trains, the Nevada Norther Railway Museum is a must see. It's an entire depot that feels like it's been time warped from the past into the present. The engine house is still in operation. The best part is that visitors are free to explore the engine house and the entire yard.There's no other museum like it. A complete period operating rail yard is a unique treasure.

While passing through Ely I decided to stop and spend the night. In the morning I rode over to the Nevada Northern Railway Museum to check it out. It opens at 8AM and I actually arrived at the opening time and found it a bit early. I was able to walk around and look at some of the rail cars and look at the museum. The train ride doesn't leave until 9:30AM. I killed some time until then by looking at everything. The cost was $27.00 which included the train ride and the museum exhibits. The train ride was enjoyable, especially sitting outside in the open air car. Going uphill the train engine will shoot out soot but it didn't bother me. There's snacks and a bathroom available on board the train as well. It's about a 90 minute round trip ride and at the turn around point is a mock town and a fake cemetery which was funny. The train also goes through two tunnels and it was fun. After the ride you can take a included tour of the engine building and other sites. There's a gift shop available as well as very modern bathrooms. Even though I'm not a train person I enjoyed visiting here and will forever remember these memories.

We paid a pittance to walk around and see some vintage railway equipment and buildings. If you pay considerably more you can ride on an operating steam powered train. Not a bad deal, but not a lot to see either.

First the good - we did the "restoration rails" ride. This had a tour and a train ride. The tour went through a few of the buildings, and explained some of the items that had been restored. The items were featured on a TV show called "American Restoration". Then we went on the train ride and the guide explained a bit about the train, some more about the museum and additional info on the tv show and items. The bad - This started at 6:30. We were told it would last about 1.5 hours. It actually lasted almost 3. The problem with this, which we did not know is that almost EVERYTHING in Ely shuts down at 8 or 9. So it was hard to find something to eat afterwards. This would not be a problem if you are aware of this and can plan for it. So be advised about this.Also - it got dark pretty early there - I would say that by the time we finished our tour and headed out on the train, we had about 2/3 or our train ride in the dark. I would have preferred to see the scenery on the train ride. So again - just be advised and maybe take an earlier train ride or go earlier in the year if you want to see scenery.
