santa maria valley historical society

Tucked in next to the Chamber of Commerce, this is a charming museum that focuses on local history, but has many artifacts and displays that relate to US history in general from the late 1800's into the 20th Century. I was the only visitor at the time, and the volunteer on duty (who was related to some of the pioneers) shared a lot of interesting stories and details relating to several of the exhibits. I especially enjoyed the exhibit about Santa Maria BBQ - never seen that much meat that wasn't on the hoof! I spent about an hour in this lovely place and every time I turned around I saw something else worth looking at more closely. Admission is free, but of course, donations are welcome. There is also a small gift shop which helps support the Historical Society.
