There are always wildlife to see here. It's so peaceful; I love walking through. If you need some tranquility and quiet time. This is the place for you.

We were quite surprised that dogs were not allowed on the Steigerwald Lake Trail so we found the Cape Horn Trailhead instead. Its a really nice trail and we all got some much needed exercise. The trail is located at Salmon Creek Rd and the Park and Ride parking lot. There are bathrooms there too. We took a picnic lunch and enjoyed the day! !

I enjoyed visiting Steigerwald Lake National Wildlife Refuge. There is a nice trail that takes one to the Columbia River. It was fun to see the white board near the parking lot area where people listed what type of wild life they had seen on their refuge. The day I was there wild life sightings included osprey, mallard, swallows, garden snake, blue heron and bald eagles.

You can see deer, geese, falcons, hawks, and many more birds here. You can walk through from the hwy 14 parking area on a trail through the grasses. Or park at William Clark St. Park and walk the pathway. The paths do meet on the Washougal dike. From there you can view the Columbia river. Dogs on a leash. Bike riders on the dike trail as well as horseback riders.

I love the trail, with it's crative art installations, but I love the wildlife even more so. this is an active wetland, and their are tons of birds and deer, rabbits and other animals all around the area. I can't promise you'll see the animals, but you can rest assured they are there. I have been very lucky in spotting a number of Canadian Geese, ducks, deer and lots more. The only drawback is dogs are not allowed. This is understandable, but still frustrating for my doggie who has to be left behind.

This refuge just opened to the public a few years ago. It has a very nice walking trail (part is closed during the winter months to protect the geese that overwinter here). The trail crosses an open wetland, winds through a forested area next to the Columbia River , and passes by two lakes and a creek before joining the trail along the Columbia River dike. You can see osprey, bald eagles, harriers, all manner of perching birds (some are endemics) and it is common to see signs of recent beaver activity, and many deer who live on the refuge. You are not allowed to bring your dog or bike on the trail, but walkers are welcome, and it is a peaceful, lovely place...yes, even when the gorge winds blow it is beautiful. Many people drive right by the gate on Highway 14 not even realizing the refuge is there and open to the public dawn to dusk.

This is a great place for a walk in nature. Expect to see many different kinds of birds depending on the season. You will in all likelihood see deer, musk rat, raccoon and other animals.Expect a surprise as you enter the trail heads,I will not tell you what they are ,you will have to find out for yourself. They are wonderful !!! Go enjoy and tell other people about the great time you had at Steigerwald Lake National Wildlife Refurge

Located at the mouth of the beautiful Columbia River Gorge, this wildlife refuge is a great place to walk. Parking lot and restroom is just off Highway 14. The trail leads down to theColumbia River, and wildlife of many varieties abounds throughout the refuge. Take water, andperhaps a picnic lunch, and binoculars to enjoy flora and fauna throughout your walk. Easy trail with a great view of snow-capped Mt. Hood. The area is recovering nicely from last year'swildfire.

Flat walk on gravel path and boardwalk through grassy marshland and along a levee. The 3-mile loop takes you from SR 97 out to the Columbia River. There are views of Mt. Hood and the Vista House. Except for the length of trail along the river, much of the walk is in shade. Birds abound. There are sculptures along the way, but they are not as numerous as I'd hoped.
