As an avid runner (jogger), I’m always looking for running trails that can accommodate my longer training runs of 8-12 miles. This one, by far, is my favorite. The trail is very wide in most places and can easily handle the large amount of traffic that it sees from runners, walkers and bikers. The scenery is amazing- in less than 2.5 miles out, you cross the lake twice, going alongside if for a good portion of the way. There’s a ton of wildlife and it would be easy to get distracted and go for a few detours along the paths less traveled! The trail varies from very flat to some pretty serious rolling hills depending upon where you start. There are benches along the way if you need to stop and rest and there are always plenty of people to make this feel like a safe place to run. The greenways of Greensboro are absolutely one of the city’s jewels in my opinion.
We visited the park for a canoe/kayak show and it was great to get on the water. We were sad to realize the park does not allow paddle boards on the lake yet, but they said they were in the process of getting the rule looked at so hopefully they will change it soon.
Went on a bike ride and was 10 miles out before I realized it. It winds through the woods and over the lake and before you know it you are in another town. Great place to ride.
Wanted to stay local to get in a bit of walking...trails are good & I'd recommend more for those wanting a walking trail rather than those that want something more difficult. Nice venue though.
The trails in Greensboro are a great asset to this community. They are well marked, trailhead parking is available, and they are always fun. Most are easy to moderate. The Lake Brant trails are only one part of the extensive trail system and well worth a visit. These trails are not accessible but others in the system are. There is no charge for any of the trails. Many have trailheads in parks with facilities nearby but plan ahead for water and toilets.
We attempted the Piemont Trail but found it too muddy after about 3/4 of a mile. We shifted to walk next to the lake but found "No Trespassing" signs posted by the City of Greenboro. The trail is in a nice location with plenty of birds and trees. Once it is dry, it is probably a decent little hike.
The trails wind through the woods and beside Lake Brandt; they are usually in excellent condition (not for several days after storms). On weekends in particular, mountain bikers "fly" along the trails and give no warning of their approach; it can be dangerous! Bells and/or horns should be required of them!
There are soooo many bike and hiking trails around Greensboro some are more challenging then others. Just be sure that when you are planning to go that it has not rained to much or in many cases they will have the trail closed so as not to destroy the trail.
I have walked these trails and visited nearby attractions dozens of times, and will continue to do so. Each visit/walk is unique and interesting. The scenic and bucolic walking/running/biking trails around and near Lake Brandt (including Owl's Roost - nationally known mountain bike route, the greenway, Piedmont, Nat Greene, and Palmetto), adjoining Lake Higgins (including Bald Eagle - aptly named) and Lake Townsend (including Blue Heron and Townsend), comprise the best series of trails in any urban area in North Carolina, and are a model for other urban areas. In this area alone are about 50 miles of trail, most of it unpaved, natural and well-marked. Get a copy of the good map or area trails at BurMil Wildlife Center or Lake Brandt marina office. Add to these trails the 10-15 miles of trails around nearby Guilford Battleground and Country Park, and the greenway in that direction, and you really have wonderful recreational opportunities, at little or no charge. The citizens of Guilford County have approved many millions of dollars for open-space and watershed bonds in recent years to protect these in perpetuity. A visit to the adjacent Guilford National Battleground Park and visitors center (hundreds of acres and trails), nearby new (2013) first-class Science Center/Aquarium, and Burmil Park and Wildlife Center (with par 3 golf and driving range, plus picnic tables and fishing) adds even more options. While many visit all of these regularly, alas they are not as well known as they deserve to be. The trails and parks are suitable for individuals, couples and families, including children of all ages. Nearby casual but tasty dining choices are many, and include Giacamo's, Ham's, Jenn's Diner, Danny's, Poblano's, Vietnamese Garden, and Stamey's BBQ. Google Piedmonthikingandoutingclub.org, for an organization that walks these (and other area) trails on a very regular basis, and would welcome you to come along and check out a trail or two.
I feel like no one knows about the Watershed trails. Owl's Roost is a lot of fun for bikers, and I particularly like Wild Turkey (it's a bit less technically challenging). The hiking is great as well, with the Palmetto trail and a few others (I mostly bike). Great views of the lake. I almost always run into some deer on my ride - which is really cool. Pretty secluded - these trails don't seem to get much traffic. Which is wonderful :)
