I have been skiing at Boyne Highlands most of my life. I've skied all over North America also. But this is a great place for a weekend trip with girlfriends ( which is what I do) or a great family outing. Fun skiing for all, or snowboarding. Zip lines, dog sleds, big tire bicycle riding in the snow. Skating with s'mores. Great entertainment also.

Boyne Highlands offers some great skiing, the usual Boyne atmosphere and service, but in a much more laid back environment. We always have a great time at Boyne Mountain, but Boyne Highlands is a bit more low key, which is also nice. If you ski in Michigan, definitely make Boyne Highlands one of your stops!

I'll start by prefacing this review with the fact that it was warm and the conditions weren't ideal. That being said, I wasn't at all blown away with the experience. Some the runs were good but not a lot of variety. You can definitely tell you are at a ski resort that caters towards the tourist crowd, and it feels much more like a business than a place for people who just love to ski and wasn't enjoy the slopes and the outdoors. By no means a terrible place to ski but not my favorite.

Made a last-minute decision to go to B-H for a season-ending weekend of winter sports. The lifties were kind and friendly. The equipment rental staff were outstanding, making sure everyone in the group had their gear adjusted to our liking. The slopes, terrain parks and half-pipe were in great condition (didn't do any glade skiing -- not my thing). We look forward to going back again next season.

We skied at Boyne primarily so that our children could enroll in the ski school. While one of them had a good experience, the other didn't, and we won't return again. The terrain was much less varied than Nub's Nob right across the street. Glades were unpleasant to ski since the area between the trees was packed with straggly undergrowth. Lifties were all courteous and helpful, but the indoor staff left much to be desired--I had to repeatedly call the attention of the rental staff back to me instead of the other staff member (too much flirting, not enough attention to customers!).Nub's Nob across the street is less expensive and the skiing is MUCH better. Don't waste your time at Boyne.

We stayed at the Highlands for a soccer tournament last fall. Had breakfast in the (very large) main dining room a couple times - good service, very nice selection on the buffet (you could order off the menu too). Omelette station was great too! Easy for large or small groups.

if you take a lift up to the top of boyne highlands, and look across the street, you will see a snowy hill and lifts. do yourself a favor... ski down, head out to your car, drive across the street, and check out nubs nob. the hill is better. the terrain is more varied. the snow is better. the day use facilities are just as good, if not better. the prices are relatively the same.the highlands are ok, but boyne itself is the better hill, and nubs far surpasses the highlands in terms of quality of terrain. if you do ski the higlands, i suggest the north face. weather can be completely different there, which may or may not work in your favor, but the terrain is much better.

One of the best ski areas in a region with limited elevation. Boyne Highlands offers skiers 55 trails serviced by 8 chairlifts and 2 magic carpet conveyor lifts. With the exception of Heather Express high speed quad, all the lifts are the older and slower vintage; however, with a vertical drop of only 552 feet (168 meters) it does not take too long to get to the top of the hill. For northern Michigan a vertical of 552 feet is as good as it gets. We skied in early January and the snow conditions were fair. It was a little on the icy side; but thankfully, the trails were well groomed. Nearly 2/3 of the runs are best suited for the beginner and intermediate skier. Even the "most difficult/black diamond" marked trails are not that challenging. There are a few steep slopes such as Olympic, The Dark Side, and K-2. Regrettably, they are all short runs. Our favorite run continues to be Heather. It is a great intermediate slope that brings you back to the high speed quad at the center of the resort. There is also some fine intermediate level skiing on North Peak. You will need to take the Interconnect lift to get there. The chairlifts were well run with minimal wait times in the morning. The resort got much busier in the afternoon. We skied on a Sunday and were not surprised about the afternoon crowds. Provided it is not too crowded . . . you can easily ski the whole resort in one day (9 AM - 4 PM) with an hour lunch break. The on-mountain food is good but pricey. Expect to pay around $25 per person for soup, sandwich/fries, and a drink. I recommend the Black Diamond burger with sweet potato fries. The lodge restaurant gets quite busy from 11:30 AM to 1:30 PM. Therefore, finding a table can be difficult. The waitstaff are terrific. Once you find a place to sit down, the food order goes quick. The price for a lift ticket is on the expensive side, especially weekend and holiday rates. The storage lockers have been changed to take credit cards. Unfortunately, so has the price. The daily fee went from 4 quarters ($1) to $12. A 1200% increase! There are other top-notch ski areas close by such as Nub's Nob and Boyne Mountain. At Nub's Nob you can still store your ski gear for 3 quarters; and more importantly, the skiing in many aspects is better.

For those of you who do not ski, you can still have fun here. They offer a great zipline experience, dog sled rides, winter horseback riding, tubing, and fat tire snow-biking! There are three Highland cows (very cool animals) on one of the beautiful hiking/snowshoe trails. The staff is very, very friendly and helpful.

It snowed 4 inches and the wind was howling off the lake, but we really enjoyed the skiing at Boyne Highlands. My college aged daughter really enjoyed the fresh crepe and smoothie bar. We found the runs to be a bit longer than Nubs Nob. Overall we preferred this resort for skiing in northern Michigan.

Let me start of by saying that the only other place I've skied is Snowbird/Alta in Utah so I don't have much resort experience to compare to. My husband and I went for a 3 day weekend as part of our anniversary getaway. We were pleasantly surprised that there was any snow on the mountain as there was just a dusting of snow on the way up. The snow was adaquate....just wish there had been a little more. I haver never skiied on man made snow before and combined with the above freezing temps, the ground was VERY sloppy and slushy. The black diamond runs offered the best skiing as they were not used as often. Now onto the ratings of the runs. The blue runs here would be very easy greens at Snowbird. I consider myself an average blue run skier at Snowbird but the runs here were all fairly easy. I did like the terrain parks, they offer an increased level of difficulty. The bunny slope would be a nice run to learn on and the lift to that slope is free. I did not like the layout of the runs. I don't understand why they have short green runs at the top with no way to continue green to the bottom. Beginner skiers could end up in situations they are not ready to handle because there is no way to re ain on the same skill level all the way down. The signage is awful so it is very difficult to find the run you want to follow. Also the same run may be named 3 or 4 different names hence why they can have "55" runs in such a small area. This is the main reason I gave Boyne Highlands an average score. The night skiing is AWESOME! This is a big plus. It makes the high price of the lift ticket more tolerable. Most of the runs are open at night and it is well lit. Night skiing is until 9pm but it is not available every night so check the schedule.

It was really good, but don't understand why they have several paths closed. Doesn't make sense when they have enough snow.

This a good place to ski or participate in other winter activities such as snowboarding, zip line, dog sled, riding in a snow groomer, etc... Generally the conditions are very favorable - good base, nice mix of natural and man made snow, majority of runs open and all chair lifts working. I appreciate being able to buy 4 hour tickets instead full day or waiting for a certain time to buy half day. They continue to strive to be a family friendly place that keeps adults satisfied.
