If you are visiting for the first time you have to come across the Connecticut River on the Seldon Ferry! The Castle sits high above the river and affords great views! The trails are endless and there are wonderful areas for picnics! Dogs are allowed on a leash. You can have a guided visit inside this ornate castle for a fee. This should be on your to do list if you are in the area!

Gillette Castle is an excellent place to visit. The castle is outstanding and build from native stone. Wm. Gillette did an excellent job with his castle home high on the bank of the Connecticut River. Especially pretty in summer with the gardens and lovely view of the river and green valley below. Christmas is extra special with the decorations to suit the holiday. Great for families, couples, everyone. Great place to picnic and lots of trails.

This is a great attraction that starts with a video about Mr Gillette, Then take the tour of this unique castle. Walk around the grounds and enjoy a fabulous view of the river. The views in the summer and fall are fabulous. A really great place to visit with your family. There is a fee to tour the castle but it is free for seniors.

I've been to Gillette Castle many times, most recently last month for the Christmas decorations. There are several reasons to visit the state park:- The home itself (actually called the Seventh Sister). The craftsmanship is impressive, including the intricate woodwork on the doors and some of Mr. Gillette's unique inventions.- The story of Mr. Gillette and the lasting impact he made on the Sherlock Holmes character- The beautiful location above the Connecticut River and the groundsThe grounds aren't so nice in the winter, but is is worth seeing the house decorated for Christmas. Come in warmer weather to enjoy the trails.

We weren't sure what to expect when visiting this property, but we were quite glad we decided to stop. The architecture is beautiful and the history behind it is a fun story. If you take the ferry you can also see the castle up on the hill from the water.

I've been going to GC since I was a kid, and I've been bringing my kids since they were little.Last weekend, my son asked if we could go so he could take pictures. We ended up going into the castle, and touring. I've been inside once or twice. Excellent experience. The guides are very knowledgeable and friendly. This weekend, they had a bonfire going, and were selling hot cider. Perfect way to spend a cold December Sunday. As usual, the grounds and views were outstanding. Whether you're a fan of the theater, quirky architecture, or walking in the woods, I highly recommend this park. There were a lot of people there, so the castle was a little crowded, but once outside, everything was good.

Built as the home of William Gillette, actor of Sherlock Holmes fame, Gillette Castle overlooks and offers a powerful view of the Connecticut River. The architecture, history, location, relatively minimal fees of $6 and $2, and the knowledgeable guides make this an excellent family attraction. It's the type of building that makes every adult's mind travel to fantasy and imagination of a younger age ... picturing wending your way up hidden staircases, fighting that dragon, rescuing the beautiful Princess, or marrying the Prince of the Castle. Oh, and the kids seem to like it, too! Park is open year round; Castle tour are open from Labor Day weekend thru Columbus Day. Enjoy!

step back in time, to the era of an actor, who portrayed Sherlock Holmes, and built a magnificent castle, reminiscent of German castles along the Rhine. this was meant to be a representation, of an old. dilapidated castle, but amazing and its beauty. outside of the castle is free to walk around the park, with numerous picnic tables, and hiking paths. there is a $6 charge to go inside, AndExplorer mr. Gillette's masterpiece, beautiful hand carved doors, hand carved wooden light switches, a bar that is an intricate puzzle, many rooms, works of art, photos, a miniature locomotive, that was used to transport his guests around the Estate. Christmas decorations are beautiful at this time of year, plan on spending 2 or 3 hours at least, to explore the interior of the castle and the surrounding grounds. there is a beautiful overlook of the Connecticut River, from which you can watch a small ferry, that crosses the river, it is a great place to have a summer picnic, or just visit at the holiday season and enjoy free hot cider or hot chocolate, near Grand Central Station which was part of the Seven Sisters railroad system created by Gillette.

A quiet little park with many walking trails. The castle is amazing and the tour guides are knowledgeable and able to answer any questions about the building and the builder. There are places to picnic and the views of the Connecticut river are excellent. The tour guides will tell you the whole story about how the castle was built and how the actor created the stage persona that we recognize as Sherlock Holmes from the hat to the pipe. It is a great place to spend the day

This castle is an amazing place. It sits on the CT. It has plenty of places to walk, the inside can't even be explained it is probably one of the most amazing homes I have ever been in. Great place for a river side picnic and hike, and a look at the old castle!

Having taken the Essex Steam Railroad and Riverboat trip in the morning we then headed for Gillette Castle by crossing the river by the ferry. What a place! I cannot imagine what kind of thought processes William Gillette went through to design this house but I'm pleased that he did. It really does need a visit to appreciate what the man built early in the 20th Century! Wonderful.

The castle was closed for the season, but the grounds were open. The trails are not always clearly marked, but they all seem to loop around and it is not really possible to get lost. Beautiful views of the river.
