The Palmer house is a beautiful and historic site, but made all the more interesting to know the story of Captain Palmer, from his blockade running against the British as a teenager during the War of 1812 to his historic sighting of the coast of Antarctica.

Gorgeous example of mid-nineteenth century upper class living. The house is incredibly well put together and has a great story to tell. Well worth the 45 minutes or so to walk through.

Volunteers gave a a tour, and gave a fascinating overview of the 19th century captain credited with being one of the discovers of the Antarctic. Most of the houses is typical of wealthy Victorian families, but there is a very interesting museum room describing the ships he commanded and his accidental discovery of the Antarctic.

If you like to see how people lived in years gone by, this is a good example of it. Although there were renovations done to the house, and some of the articles were replications rather than authentic to the house... it was still set up to maintain how life was lived all those years ago. Just large enough to hold your interest, and small enough so that you can tour the grounds as well. The admission price of $9 included the Old Lighthouse museum (you have to drive from one place to the other), so all in all, it was worth the few hours that we invested into it. These building are maintained by the Historical Society, so the admission price was fair.

The house is just BEAUTIFUL! The guide was very knowledgeable and took us all the way to the top of the house which offered a panoramic view of the bay. If you visit the lighthouse, you receive a voucher to visit the house for FREE! The house is in wonderful condition and a little known fact is that Captain Palmer's son "discovered" the continent of Antarctica when he was just 21 years old! There are also out buildings to visit. It was definitely time well spent!

I went there while on vacatin in Stonington. It's a great area for breakfast, lunch.or dinner in town. The upkeep on the CNBPalmer house is fabulous and the tour is nice.

The Palmer house was informative. There was a lot of information available but we felt rushed. Not a relaxing time. A missed opportunity for us.

It is a beautiful spot! I live in CT and hadn't been there before. Was so glad I went. It's a must see.

Old mansion from the 1820s, Captain Palmer's claim to fame while on a seal hunt expedition that he was the first to see the Antartic. He is one of three early explorers to make this claim. His home is a well appointed home full of period furnishings. The rooms have high ceilings with beautiful marble fireplaces. I was allowed to climb to the cupola which has commanding views of the harbor. A must see if you are into local history.
