This is a workshop/studio and gallery of local chimayo weavings. Bought 2 beautiful, fairly priced weavings. One with natural dyes. On main road, and there are other shops strung along the main road.

Chimayo Trading and Mercantile has a nice selection of authentic pottery, jewelry, paintings and hand painted t-shirts, which are high quality and more reasonably priced than in Santa Fe. The owner seems quite knowledgeable about the various artists and was very helpful.

This place offers the best selection of quality jewelry, pottery and weaving that we saw on our trip. If you have more than a casual interest in this sort of shopping, it is well worth spending an hour discussing the offerings with the proprietor.

This was our first stop in Chimayo, and we really had to hold ourselves back from buying on the spot. So much great stuff, but after all, we had plenty of other places we wanted to check out before pulling the trigger on our purchases. Well, we visited those other places, even bought a few small items, but we came back to Chimayo Trading. The owner, John, is knowledgeable, engaging and applies no pressure. He can let his extraordinary selection speak for itself, but if you want to know more, just ask. The man knows his stuff. And after 25 years in the business, he'd better. We walked out at closing time with two incredible paintings and a 100+ year old hand-carved yoke that'll make an incredible textural statement on our wall. The prices were fair - or a steal when compared to 30 minutes down the road in Santa Fe. New stock comes in all the time, so if you're in the area, stop in - you'll be glad you did.

There is an amazing and beautiful variety of pottery. The pieces are authentic and more reasonably priced than Santa Fe. The owner is very knowledgeable about everything in the shop. Take your time here.

We stopped at the Chimayo Trading and Mercantile while taking the "high road" from Santa Fe to Taos. Having already shopped in Santa Fe (both in stores and with the Indians in the plaza), I was very impressed with the prices here---very reasonable! The person working was very helpful and knowlegeable, so we talked with her a long time. She kindly packaged our pottery in bubble-wrap so it would withstand our journey home. All around, great experience!

I recently purchased 3 pieces of pottery from John (in retrospect, should have bought more!), and I completely agree with previous 5 star ratings.John is so easy to work with, and Chimayo Trading is just a lovely place to visit.I look forward to a return visit in the fall.

On a recent trip to Chimayo, this ended up being one of the highlights of our trip to New Mexico. As a potter, I was really interested in the black on black pottery created by Maria Martinez. John, the owner, was extremely knowledgeable about the method of ancient pit firings and how different effects were created on the pottery. I learned so much from him and the collection of pottery, textiles, antiquities, and books was extensive. I would highly recommend stopping by his establishment, it was a beautiful gem to find!

Truly more of a gallery than a store and you'll lose track of time as you browse all the things they offer, from ceramics to rugs of every price point. Every time I've gone I've spent more money than I meant to because the pieces are so lovely. If you're lucky you'll see someone weaving a new blanket or rug and can talk to them about the process. Very interesting out of the way off the beaten path worth the trip kind of place.

This "shop" is actually more like an accessible museum.John Abrums, the owner-proprietor is knowledgeable and friendly. He is also passionate about his extraordinary collection of pottery, basketry, jewelry, rugs, fetishes, Kachinas and more. The displays are beautifully done. The setting is a great room in an adobe house on Rte. 76, not far from the Sanctuario and the Rancho de Chimayo.Chimayo Trading and Mercantile is NOT a typical "souvenir shop." All the items for sale are of very high quality and John respects the artists, contemporary and ancient, whose work he offers for sale.
